Food scene

A tea and coffee house in Edinburgh, the Elephant House was made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as J.K. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle. You’ll notice a sign on the cafe which erroneously claims that this is the “birthplace” of Harry Potter. Rowling herself addressed this sign and is quoted as saying: “I’d been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so it’s not the birthplace, but I did write in there so we’ll let them off!” Also, make sure to take a trip to the loo! The walls are covered in Harry Potter graffiti with messages and drawings left by fans who have travelled from all over the world to come here.

Harry Potter fans can feel like a local wizard through stopping into The Dog House pub on Clerk Street and sampling Butterbeer, the brew frequently drunk by characters throughout the novels, which is a tasty combination of Fosters and syrup. This pub is also a dog lover’s dream, having a famous resident bulldog roaming the pub both day and night.

Even though the location of Hogwarts has never been officially determined, rumour has it that J.K. Rowling based the magical school on George Heriot's School in Edinburgh's city centre. Built in 1628 with four towers and breath-taking gothic architecture, you can understand why the author found it so inspiring. Hogwarts also mirrors George Heriot’s with its system of four houses and an on-going house competition each year. As a working school, it's rarely open to the public, but you can get a good view of it from George IV Bridge, Lauriston Place and Greyfriar's Kirkyard.

Shopping

Known by some locals as ‘Diagon House,’ Museum Context is a fascinating shop spread over two stone vaults and looks exactly like the Diagon Alley shops as depicted in the Harry Potter films.
