Neighbourhoods

The village of Great Ouseburn sits on the source of the river Ouse. It's a peaceful, pretty rural village surrounded by farmland. However, it has a fantastic pub, a very well stocked shop (delicious and fresh bakery goods on Saturday morning), a newly renovated playground with basketball/football court and picnic area and the neighbouring village of Upper Dunsforth also has a vineyard. If you like a really good coffee to kick start your day you'll find The Coffee Bike serving delicious take away barista coffee from either outside the shop (Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays) or outside the village hall (Sunday mornings)

Food scene

We're spoilt for choice with regards to pubs. The best in the area happens to be walking distance and in our village (and we're not biased, honest!)
Our fantastic village pub serving delicious food with friendly service. Book online for tables inside. There is a large courtyard with outdoor seating which you don't need to book for. Child and dog friendly and only a short walk from The Poplars.

Sightseeing, shopping and eating

So many great towns and cities on our doorstep to visit. York being the number one tourist destination in terms of museums and visitor attractions. But there's plenty in our smaller towns too.
Historic York is 15 miles away and has so much to see and do. Visit the many museums and the cathedral, stroll the shambles and the riverside or the city walls, enjoy the cafes and restaurants. Museums include the National Railway Museum, The Dig, York Chocolate Story, York Castle Museum, The York Dungeon and more. If you don't want to drive all the way to York you can catch a train from Cattal where there is free parking. This takes about 20 minutes and they go half hourly/hourly dependent on week/weekends.

Local produce

As a county, Yorkshire is very proud of its produce from cheese to wine and of course pork pies!
Less than a mile away is Dunesforde Vineyard where you can do a tour and taste their white and sparkling wines. The vineyard opened in 2019 and their terrace bar has already become a real local favourite.

Fantastic for riverside and woodland walks. There is a small car park on Ripley Road. Drop into nearby Ripley or Knaresborough for ice cream too! You can do a longer loop of about an hour and a half that takes you via the Gardener's Arms in Bilton (dog friendly). It's a lovely walk and you can also add on Knaresborough which would be more like three hours.

Forgotten Bridge and Lost Beach – a walk around Sylvan Nature Reserve. The reserve was established by a family business to support the nature, now thriving within it. An excellent two-mile walk based on the bridleway starts at St John’s Church in centre of Kirk Hammerton. Dogs on leads.
