Sightseeing

Historic Catherine Hill is a must see & do! Enjoy a swim or surf at this magnificent beach, grab some lunch or a cold beer at the iconic Wallarah Hotel (Catho Pub to the locals), walk north to the Shark Hole or south to Ghosties; there are rock pools to enjoy, caves to explore and you may even see an echidna on your stroll. NB: We recommend you always check tides, swell & weather conditions before and during your time here. Please consider these if planning to walk on the rocks as the rocks (like all coastal areas) can be dangerous and the ocean can be unpredictable.

Pristine beaches (Frazer & Birdie), beautiful picnic areas & bush walking galore, first class fishing and divine vistas are just some of what this nature reserve offers. Bush walk the Moonee Beach trail, Palms circuit or sit and look up to find an emu wren or just enjoy the Australian flora in flower. Part of the Sydney Basin, Munmorah State Conservation area illustrates the impressive geology of the region, a magnificent coastline where you may even get a wave from a whale or two. National Parks & Wildlife entry fee $8 per vehicle per day or multi park passes are available. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/munmorah-state-conservation-area/visitor-info NB: We recommend you always check tides, swell & weather conditions before and during your time here. No unauthorised cars allowed but that’s ok because this is one for the bush walkers & mountain bike riders. Walk ir ride out to very tip of Point Wolstoncroft (past the Sport & Recreation Camp) and take in the view across to Pulbah Island. If you are a keen walker you can even leave the car at home and head out from the cottage on foot.

A day by the lake favourites.

Closer to home and a short stroll from the cottage, Sandy Beach is the village's favourite swimming spot. Maps can be found in our visitor information area. Pack a sandwich and sunscreen and relax for the day. BBQ, playground and toilet facilities are close by. Not recommended during westerly winds.

City/town information

Bohemian Newcastle is a steel city no more. A thriving bar and food scene, a mecca for creatives and this city of magnificent beaches makes Newcastle a day out must do. Drive the coast road past Merewether, on to Bar Beach, by Edward Park on to Newcastle Beach then around to Nobby's. At Merewether you'll pass The Beaches Hotel on your left; a great place for a cold one and a great meal and the Merewether Surfhouse on your right another local’s favourite. Drive on and at Bar Beach Swell Kiosk you'll have the best vegie burger and view anywhere on the planet. You could picnic by the famous rotunda under the magnificent Norfolk Island Pines in King Edward Park, a recreational reserve from the 1860's then wonder down the hill for a swim at the incredible Bogey Hole (a convict hewn ocean baths and a real jewel in Newcastle's crown). Grab a coffee or ice-cream cone at Newcastle Beach and watch the dolphins play amongst the surfers quite literally. If it's lunch time we can't recommend Scott St Sticky Rice Thai enough; our favourite Thai in Newy. Drive on to Nobby's to eat that delicious thai and follow up with a swim at the beach or the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths... and that's just the coastline. The Civic Theatre is fantastic for a night out, loads of international acts appear here, with dinner a short stroll down the road at Newcastle's famous Darby St; we recommend Goldbergs. If you prefer a wine bar, pub, long relaxed dinner or live music, Newcastle has loads on offer. During the day a walk along Honeysuckle foreshore is a great start, pop over to the Newcastle Museum (always has new & excellent temporary exhibitions as well) https://www.newcastlemuseum.com.au , from there wander up to the Newcastle Art Gallery https://nag.org.au then finish off with a coffee and a shop along Darby Street. Head back around along King or Hunter Streets and head up to the lighthouse at Nobby's. Walk back along the mighty Hunter River to Honeysuckle. If you are interested in shopping there are 2 major shopping centres - Westfield Kotara & Charlestown Square. Movie theatres, bowling, mini golf, and amusements can also be found at these centres. These are just a few of the things Newcastle and surrounds has to offer ... we recommend looking at https://www.visitnewcastle.com.au

Beautiful beaches meet pristine national parks and pretty waterways on the NSW Central Coast. You can meet native animals at the Australian Reptile Park, sample local food and wine at countless waterfront restaurants and gastropubs, discover a thriving arts scene, go horse riding or enjoy the eclectic shopping experience that Long Jetty now offers. For shopping centres we recommend Westfield Tuggerah or the smaller but closer Lakehaven Shopping Centre. Movie theatres can be found at both. Drive from Summerland Point along Elizabeth Bay Drive past the best place to go prawning on the coast (Lizzie Bay shhhh), Lakes Beach with Birdie Island is on your left. Stop off at Norah Head Light House and have a quick dip at Soldiers Beach. Hope back in the car and head south to the Entrance, feed the pelicans and grab some fresh fish and chips for yourselves. Continue south to Terrigal, climb the Skillion, browse the boutiques then enjoy an incredible meal at the Terrigal Beach House or at any of the quality restaurants along the strip. The Central Coast is vast and has endless activities and experiences to offer. We recommend you look at https://www.visitnsw.com/destinations/central-coast to explore the countless options.
