Good coffee

Way too often, you spend money on a cup of coffee that is just no good. Well - not if I can help it, you won’t! These are my favourite coffee spots close to my apartment - and a few beyond.
This place is owned by dear friends of mine; my kids literally grew up in this place! This is a coffee ‘collective’ as they collaborate directly with the farmers that grow the coffee they use. Baristas in the coffee shop will make sure the final cup is one of the best you’ve had.

Auren's Deli is a home away from home. The coffee is always black and the sort changes from day to day. Also, new day, new menu if you come for a meal. I enjoy this place for breakfast or lunch, the coffee, the decor and the hosts.

The coffee is great. But no secret: I come here for the cardamom croissant. If I were to decide on ONE SINGLE cake to enjoy for the remains of my days, this would be it! Go! You won't regret this.

Kids

Travelling with kids is great! And exploring cities with a kids’ perspective is fun! My own kids are now 8 and 13, so I give you: Their favorites over the years.
This sunspot meets playground meets ballcourt meets (in summer) a small kiddy pool. If you can find the red button on thw edge of the pool, you might have someone shrieking wet from the surprise water fountain coming from you’ll-never-know-where!

The playground at my kids’ school was just renovated and open for anyone when school’s out: Late afternoons/evenings/weekends. Find it at Nyelandsvej and Emil Chr. Hansens vej - 5 minute walk from the apt.

If you buy ONE cake during your trip, HART’s cardamom croissant should be it! In my familiy, we literally call each other if one of us is there just to check if anyone else is in need of thw cardamom croissant. I once had a craving and went all the way across town to their other store in Christianshavn - because they were sold out in Frederiksberg! The coffee is quite decent also!

Nice ramen, good beer. Eat on the spot, don’t takeout. The ramen is wayyyyy better, when you eat it in-house.

Places and areas

Some places are just more interesting than others. When travelling, you don’t always have the time and means to seek out the best ones yourself. So a bit of guidance.
Jægersborggade cleaned up! 15 years back the street was known for drugdealing and not much else. The street’s residents came together to make a change and today Jægersborggade and adjacent Stefansgade and Nørrebroparken is one of the hippest and popular places in town. Indie shops, restaurants, coffee, art. Check the shops out - or just go for a stroll and inhale the vibe. The playground at the Stefansgade end of the park has been a favorite while my kids grew up.

Værnedamsvej is a 30 minute walk from my apartment. You’ll find restaurants, fish, cheese and wine shop, clothing, bars and more - all in local air! If you find that this street has a bit of a Parisienne vibe to it, you might well be right: The French School (attracting Copenhagen-based French families) was situated in this street until quite recently. Have your coffee at Rist (coffee), Falernum (wine) and visit Granola (café), an institution all on its own.

Hans is the most dedicated wine guy around. Pop by Friday afternoon for tasting (“Fredagsslik”, meaning Friday candy - a play of words on the common Friday sweet treat accompanying a Friday night Disney TV show; highlight of the week for many Danish kids) and buy a bottle or two of Hans’ recommendations.
