Food scene

The Shoulder of Mutton has a nice beer garden with views over the local park, and there's a whole ton of parking. It's dog friendly and good for families. Look out for the wildflower verge right outside the pub during spring and summer - it's one of the best in the village.

The Bowling Green is probably the largest pub in Bradwell and has arguably the best views over the valley from its beer garden (with BBQ and sheltered sitting areas). It's right by the village orchard and a lovely walk through the woods and hills to Castleton.

Grab a Drink

Built in 1676, the White Hart is Bradwell's oldest surviving pub. It's a popular drinking pub, and it features a really cosy atmosphere, plenty of original features and excellent drinks on top. There's no food, no beer garden and no parking, making it a really traditional style pub. It's better suited to couples, ale fans, and solo travellers than families.

City/town information

Castleton is famous for its foreboding Peveril Castle. However, if you take the slow, winding walk from the Bowling Green in Bradwell through to Castleton, you'll come out on a lovely old town square, and take a traipse through small village streets to a selection of delis, bakeries, shops, pubs, and more. Castleton is known for its caverns and the local Blue John Stone, which you can buy at a number of small jewellers in the village. there's also a brook that runs through the centre and great walks to Mam Tor, one of the most picturesque hills in the Peaks.

For a quieter afternoon out, try Hope. It's small and features a great selection of high quality shops, including the fantastic Watson's Farm Shop. There are walks from there to Edale, Losehill, and Castleton, and a lovely old church. There's even a rare Village Pound, where lost cattle would be taken and impounded - a little piece of unknown history.

Tideswell is one of the bigger villages nearby, with a small cathedral, two shopping streets, a couple of great chippies, and more. The cathedral is a must-see, and it's worth walking around the smaller streets to see some charming old cottages.

Sightseeing

Abney Moor and its neighbour Shatton Moor can be reached by walking up the steep Bradwell Edge. There's an accessible nature reserve here that you can follow through to Shatton, a pleasant little hamlet of only around 80 people. Up on the moor, you won't see or hear any cars at all - great for a quiet retreat or a bit of landscape drawing or painting. A bit of history: the Grey Ditch, a scheduled historical monument, can be seen from here.
