Food scene

Local pubs all of which can be walked or cycled to. Being in the Surrey Hills, the walks are fairly hilly, although the route to the Sun and Tich is fairly flat. All serve great food and are very friendly and welcoming.
The Merry Harriers, Hambledon (3.8 miles) https://merryharriers.com/ A charming old pub, with good pub food and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Winterton, Chiddingfold (4.7 miles) https://www.dirty-sixth.com/winterton Described on their website as “an Asian smokehouse. The love child of a rebellious barbecue joint and an offbeat oriental supermarket”. The ‘Wint’ as the locals call it, is one of our favourite places to eat. The food is delicious, a bit ‘out there’, but incredibly good! We love it! It’s owned by some really nice South Africans and is the sister pub to the award wining White Hart in Witley (see below). There is a fab beer garden, tipi tent and play area for the kids. It will take you approx. 11 mins to drive, or about 1 hr 15 minutes to walk (depending on the route you take).

The White Hart, Witley (5 miles) https://www.dirty-sixth.com/white-hart A 16th century public house serving up a slice of metropolitan life in the Surrey hills with its modern interpretation of firewood cookery and contemporary cocktails. Inspired by the history and heritage of American pitmasters but with a distinctly modern British accent. The concept is simple - all natural, high welfare smoked meat served by the ½ pound, Texas meat, market style on butchers paper with seasonal sides and smutty desserts. Another one of our favourites! It will take you 15 mins to drive and about 2 hours to walk (depending on your route).

The Sir Roger Tichborne, Alfold (5.4 miles) Known to the locals as ‘the Tich’, this is country dining at its best. The pub is a charming 19th Century oak beamed building, with a glorious open fire-place making it one of the cosiest pubs around. Be sure to ask to sit in the old bar rather than the new part for the authentic ‘Tich’ experience. The food is tasty, serving traditional pub favourites and succulent seasonal dishes. Outside is a pleasant beer garden which overlooks some beautiful Sussex countryside. There are some stunning walks nearby, including the Wey Navigation, or you can cycle or walk to it direct from the cottage via Sidney Woods in Dunsfold. It takes 10 mins to drive, or approx. 1 hour to walk (fairly flat). You can shorten the walk by driving to and parking in Sidney Woods Carpark, Dunsfold.

The Sun, Dunsfold (1.8 miles) https://www.suninndunsfold.co.uk/ More of a locals pub, serving your typical pub grub. It is situated on the village green and is a great place for a pitstop to break up a walk or cycle. It is a short drive away or takes approx. 35 mins to walk via Hook House Lane, which is a very pleasant, quiet lane passing farms and paddocks along the way.

Although we have never visited, the 350-year old Horse Guards Inn has great reviews and has been recommended to us as being another special place to visit. Located in the heart of the South Downs National Park, it has tremendous views and stunning walks nearby. The pub is relaxed, friendly and informal with wooden tables and chairs, oak beams and stripped floorboards. In winter you can roast chestnuts foraged from Petworth Park on one of the open log fires, play board games at the bar and forget about outside with a warm glass of spiced cider. On sunnier days, enjoy the hidden garden slumped in deck chairs or on straw-bale seats or have lunch at shaded tables on benches covered with sheepskins, eating beside the herbs and vegetables you’ll find on your plate. The food is supposed to be scrumptious. It is always busy, so plan ahead and book early. Takes approx. 30 minutes by car.

If you fancy something a bit special, this is a great place to visit. Located just a stone’s throw from Blackdown Hill on the borders of Surrey and West Sussex, The Noah’s Ark is a beautiful 16th century pub overlooking an idyllic village green and serving simple, interesting British classics built around the English seasons with the emphasis on fresh, clean flavours, with an occasional French twist. It’s the perfect place to stop off at on the way back from a walk around Petworth Park or Blackdown Hill. Takes approx. 25 minutes to drive.
