Food scene

In the summer of 2013 The Orangery Tea Room was established serving the highest quality teas and coffees alongside fresh, locally sourced food. The spectacular Orangery, designed in 1777 by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, houses delicate plants of many kinds including the oldest camellia in the country. I cannot recommend their scones enough. It’s the perfect place for cake, scones or lunch and a lovely walk around the lake and grounds.

The perfect place for breakfast / brunch. They may not have the views, but the food more than makes up for it and their prices. All the staff are so friendly, but you must pre-book. From Monday 12 April they’ll be opening their new courtyard as well as their front terrace with blankets from 8.30am, you must pre-book a table.

Check out their website for their set menus - great value with fabulous sea views. If it’s a warm day, definitely request a table on their balcony - you’re practically on the beach.

If you fancy dining in Eastbourne this is the place to go. Especially on a colder evening as there’s no views, it’s below street level, but a fabulous atmosphere, great food and wines.

There’s nothing better than breakfasting alfresco and this is the place to do it. Friendly staff who will swap any breakfast items - just ask. Reasonable prices and a stunning view. Another just a stroll away at The Waterfront.

Fusciardi's is a small family run business which began in the January of 1967 with Antonio and Anna Fusciardi. Their 18 flavours of Italian ice cream are all handmade and delicious. If you walk into Eastbourne you’ll find them on your right hand side just before the Pier.

A family-owned Wine Estate, established in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver, dedicated to producing some of the world’s finest sparkling wines from a perfect site in Sussex, just outside of Alfriston. Located on a wonderful south-facing slope in England’s South Downs, the climate, chalk soil and aspect make it the perfect site for producing Sussex Sparkling wine. The perfect place for that special lunch - The Tasting Room, is my absolute favourite. There’s also a great walk around the vineyard, pick up a free map from their Cellar Door. The drive up to the estate is well worth it just for the spectacular views.

Sightseeing

Alfriston with its chocolate-box-pretty pubs, medieval buildings and independent shops, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. The bucolic, rolling landscape of the South Downs is the main event here, though, so don’t forget your walking shoes and to soak up those views. Badgers Tearoom is definitely worth a visit for cake, scones or lunch. And Alfriston Arts for local artists paintings and prints, greeting cards, gifts and fresh flowers is a must.

BEACHY Head is a famous for the iconic red and white striped lighthouse. The cliff is the highest chalk sea cliff in the UK – 531ft above sea level – giving spectacular views. You can drive up or walk. The walk from Eastbourne is 7.1 miles. You start this walk along Eastbourne’s pleasant seafront, and then follow the coast into a hidden valley (with fine downland flowers and butterflies in summer), from where it is a steep climb up onto Beachy Head for lunch. The next stretch is one of the great classic coastal walks, a rolling descent along chalk cliffs down to Birling Gap for tea. From there, you have a gentle climb inland, with fine sea and downland views, to the village of East Dean, where there are further refreshment options (The Tigers Inn is my favourite) and frequent buses back to Eastbourne. They run every 10 minutes.

Collecting and exhibiting contemporary art for nearly 100 years, Towner Eastbourne presents an ambitious and high quality programme of historic, modern and contemporary art through temporary and collection based exhibitions, talks, events and creative activities for as many as 160,000 visitors each year. Founded in 1923 as a result of a bequest by Alderman John Chisholm Towner to create ‘an art gallery for the people’, this founding ethos remains at the heart of Towner’s mission. Towner’s Collection is best known for its modern British art, including the largest and most significant body of work by Eric Ravilious (1903–1942), and a growing collection of international contemporary art including works by Dineo Seshee Bopape, John Akomfrah, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Tacita Dean, Grayson Perry and Wolfgang Tillmans. The exterior walls of the Towner Art Gallery have been transformed into a large-scale, colourful geometric mural to mark the 10th anniversary of the gallery’s move from its original home in Eastbourne’s Old Town.

Charleston is a property associated with the Bloomsbury group. It was the country home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and is an example of their decorative style within a domestic context, representing the fruition of more than sixty years of artistic creativity. In addition to the house and artists' garden, Charleston hosts a year-round programme of Bloomsbury and contemporary exhibitions in a suite of galleries designed by Jamie Fobert Architects which opened in September 2018. Two restored barns are home to The Threshing Barn café and The Hay Barn where events and workshops are held throughout the year. The outer studio at Charleston hosts a permanent display of Bell and Grant's Famous Women Dinner Service, and there is also a shop selling Bloomsbury-inspired art, homeware fabrics, fashion, books and stationery.

Birling Gap is a beautiful and tranquil enclosed pebble beach set below the dramatic backdrop of the Seven Sisters cliffs. The beach offers wide views of the rolling Sussex downland. There is plentiful parking, and after descending the metal staircases to explore the beach or taking a dramatic walk along the clifftops, refreshments are available from the National Trust Visitor Centre cafe. The beach is only accessed down a steep set of steps.

Set in 120 acres the reservoir, which sits below the South Downs and the Long Man of Wilmington, has been designated as a Local Nature Reserve. Arlington has also been classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, thanks to their extensive conservation work to improve and protect the habitats of several native species. It is a prized location for bird watchers and visitors who flock to follow the picturesque Osprey Trail.

Their Eastbourne centre is a wonderful location for water sports. Set right on the beach, you can enjoy immediate access to the open sea and the prevailing south westerly winds. And they’re right next to Princes Park, with its large, shallow lake that’s perfect for beginners, or when the weather’s a bit rough.
