Greenville's downtown has long been one of the Upstate's most popular destinations for shopping, dining and entertainment, and over the past few years, has amassed a multitude of accolades and awards from national publications. Livability recently ranked it one of the Top 10 Best Downtowns in the country, and The New York Times called Greenville "a national model for a pedestrian-friendly city center." Liberty Bridge The award-winning Liberty Bridge serves as Greenville’s signature postcard. At 345 feet long, 12 feet wide and 8 inches thick, the concrete reinforced deck is supported by a single suspension cable. The deck's distinctive curve has a radius of 214 feet and it is cantilevered toward the waterfall from supporting cables on the outside. The bridge deck also inclines 12 feet or 3% from east to west over the river. While bridges with similar structural concepts have been built in Europe, this bridge is unique in its geometry and there is nothing like it in the United States. Falls Park on the Reedy Far more than a nature lover's paradise, Falls Park on the Reedy with its stunning Reedy Falls is one of Greenville's greatest treasures. The park serves as an oasis within the city with inviting trails and gardens leading off to a revitalized Main Street, with local shops, craft-beer pubs, and a global array of restaurants.

Hiking and Exploring

A hidden gem in Marietta. The park consists of 3,900 acres of pristine wilderness that joins into the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area merging this park with another state park, Caesars Head, for a total of 13,000 acres. Jones Gap, though, is unique in that it's carved into a slender mountain cove. And exploring the floor of that cove as well as up into the surrounding mountains is like stepping into Narnia. The park itself has just over 28 miles of hiking trails that are magical all unto themselves. Another 32 miles of trails in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area top off the total hiking distance here at 60 miles. By far, the most popular (and with good reason!) trail is the 4.3-mile moderate Rainbow Falls Trail that leads to a 100 -foot waterfall deep in the cove. Worth the walk!

A granitic gneiss outcropping atop the dramatic Blue Ridge Escarpment gives Caesars Head State Park its name. Every fall, from the easily-accessible overlook atop the rocky peak of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, sight-seers are treated to the Hawk Watch program and a spectacular view that extends into North Carolina and Georgia. One of the most popular trails at Caesars Head is the four-mile, round trip Raven Cliff Falls trail. This hiking trail leads to the scenic overlook, where you can view the 420-foot Raven Cliff Falls. There is also a 6.6 mile round trip hike to a suspension bridge that crosses the creek above Raven Cliff Falls. The bridge offers a unique view of the falls as they plunge deep into the mountain cove below.

Table Rock State Park fits the bill for the natural beauty attributed to scenic Highway 11. The towering mountain, which gives the park its name, serves as a backdrop for the 3,000-acre park and its facilities. Table Rock State Park hiking trails serve as an access point for the 80-mile Foothills Trail. South Carolina hikers can use to travel between several connected South Carolina State Parks. The Table Rock State Park hiking trails take hikers past mountain streams and waterfalls to the tops of Pinnacle and Table Rock mountains. Recommended Pinnacle Mountain Falls, Pinnacle Lake Trail Loop. For more rugged hikers choose Pinnacle Mountain or Table Rock trails to summit the mountain (3,124 ft) and enjoy spectacular views.

Sightseeing

South Carolina's oldest private institution of higher learning, Furman was named one of the 362 most beautiful places in America by the American Society of Landscape Architects. Travel + Leisure magazine ranked it among the most beautiful college campuses in the United States. A 13-mile network of paved trails offers visitors the opportunity to explore the 750-acre wooded campus. The university also features a self-guided walking tour that takes you past most of the notable buildings. You can pick up a campus map outside the Welcome Center near the main entrance. The most popular route in the trail system is a 1.5-mile loop around the university's 40-acre, spring-fed lake with its stunning view of Paris Mountain. The centerpiece of the college campus, it is home to Furman's famed Bell Tower. As you make your way around the lake, you'll come across a number of other points of interest, including a rose garden, a replica of the cabin Henry David Thoreau inhabited while writing "Walden" and the two-classroom clapboard "Old College" built in 1851. You'll also pass the Place of Peace, the first Japanese temple ever to be brought to America. The Hei-Sei-Ji temple was donated to the liberal arts school by the Tsuzuki family, residents of both Greenville and Japan. A team of Japanese experts reconstructed the temple using more than 2,400 pieces that had been shipped from the original site in Nagoya, Japan. Adjacent to the Place of Peace is the Asia Garden and koi pond. Take your time meandering among the flowering plants and water features, designed for contemplation and meditation.
