Places to Visit - Old San Juan

Getting Around: • Walking – The easiest, and perhaps most efficient way to see San Juan is by foot. The streets are narrow and jam-packed with visitors, making it a tough spot to drive or walk, but an excellent place for a day-long stroll. • Trolley – Old San Juan offers a free trolley service for visitors stopping at the most popular attractions. The trolley runs Monday through Friday from 7am. until 7pm, and weekends from 9am until 7pm. Please note it is operated by the government so it may not be the most reliable system. • Taxis and ridesharing – Taxis, as well as Uber ridesharing company, are available in the city. • Driving – Parking is available in paid garages around the city. Metered parking is also available; however, it may be scarce. Be cautious to not park in a residential zone.

Puerto Rico's hand-rolled cigars are legendary to stogie smokers. In Old San Juan, it's common to see men (and occasionally women) sitting at makeshift workstations, creating them with ease. This wood-paneled parlor and shop has the largest selection (over 300 varieties) of cigars in the Caribbean, including those made from rum-soaked and aged leaves. If you want to buy gifts for someone back home, the huge humidor contains a plethora of choices. The super-knowledgeable salespeople will walk you through any question you may have. Tips: • An ornate and well-ventilated smoking lounge, complete with rich, leather chairs is available for those who choose to enjoy a cigar on-site. A bar selling cognacs, rums, and whiskey adds to the experience. • Opening hours are surprisingly late making this a great place to spend the evening after other shops and restaurants have closed for the day. If you're not into cigars the shop also sells pipes, pens, and watches. • Don't expect to find Cuban cigars here. This is a place of San Juanero pride. Plan to stay: 1-2 hours

Visitors to the Capitol can make a reservation for a guided tour. The history of the Capitol building began on February 7, 1907, when Don Luis Munoz Rivera, an important figure of the political history of Puerto Rico and a legislator at the time, introduced House Bill 84 to the House of Delegates. Although the bill was passed, and a neoclassical design had been chosen, the construction of the Capitol encountered several fiscal, economic and political difficulties which resulted in the work being suspended twice. Despite all difficulties encountered throughout the years, the Capitol building was finally inaugurated on February 11, 1929. On June 30, 1977, the Capitol of Puerto Rico was designated a Historic Landmark and on November 18, 1977, it was listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. This two-floor museum in the Santurce neighborhood was once a former public school. It's now home to over 900 works of art, many from emerging local talent. There's plenty of modern art on display, and although quite a few signs and descriptions are solely in Spanish, the pieces often speak for themselves. The small gift shop is a great place to buy a unique souvenir, especially for children who like clay sculptures. Tips: • The MAC offers free admission, but happily accepts donations. The majority of San Juan's hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs are centered along Ashford Avenue in the Condado section of the city. “This Condado-area street is located within walking distance of the neighborhood's oceanfront hotels, a mini-mall, and trendy, high-end stores like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Cartier. Yes, you can find many of these labels back home, but there are bargains to be had here if you know what to look for. “ Tips: • Environmentally minded shoppers should stop at Hecho a Mano (translation: "handmade"), which sells artisan items made from organic materials. • Make a day of it here. Start at one of Condado's beach clubs to catch some sun before hitting the shops. • If you have a taste for non-typical, stylish local designs, head to Nono Maldonado to scoop up a linen 'guayabera' (a shirt donned by many of Puerto Rico's dapper gentlemen). • While bartering is not the norm for well-known chain stores, you may be successful trying it in smaller, locally-owned shops. Tips: • The plaza offers a bowling alley and 13-screen movie theater for indoor fun. • The mall is open Monday through Saturday 9am to 9pm, and Sunday, 11am to 7pm. • Every Thursday to Sunday, the mall hosts a farmer's market, where visitors can sample over 100 varieties of island produce on the third floor. • To get here, make your way to Hato Rey, about a 15-minute ride from San Juan's port and most hotels. • Deaf persons are assisted with an ASL interpreter and use of an iPad to communicate with hearing salespersons and customer service representatives. • Mothers with babies have use of a comfortable nursing room here. Balneario Monserrate, often referred to simply as Luquillo Beach, is a long crescent of fine sand, with plenty of mature palm trees for shade, and El Yunque National Forest in the background. Due to a fringing reef, there are no waves to speak of, so it's a perfect beach for young kids. The beach has some food kiosks, restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. There is a small fee to park in the gated parking area. “Luquillo Beach offers fewer crowds than San Juan's center, a reef-protected shore, and miles of white sand. Visitors love the calm waves and the lines of swaying palm trees. Although a bit of a hike from the city center, it's worth it, and situated very close to the El Yunque National Rain Forest makes it convenient to visit the two destinations on the same day.” Tips: • Beach vendors are present, and the drinks are very moderately priced. • Expect to pay a minimal fee for parking and the use of the restroom facilities. If you would like to visit a Bioluminescent Bay, we have two (2) on the main island (on Parguera and Fajardo), and one (1) on Vieques island. Vieques’ one is the best, but you would have to stay overnight there to be able to visit it, plus you will need some coordination on transportation to get there, either by flying or boating. The best date to watch the Bio Bays is when there is a new moon or a couple of days before or after it. So, if you will be staying around that time, visiting a Bio Bay would be a great excursion to do; highly recommended!!

Walking up the winding steps to The Mezzanine you’re transported to 1950s Old San Juan. You’ve just stepped into the home of Pedro Albizu Campos, leader of the Puerto Rican nationalist movement that’s plotting to overthrow the US government. Past the foyer and the living room, behind the bar next to the shelf stocked with pristine bottles of spirits, aperitifs, and bitters, a cement wall still sports bullet holes from when the FBI raided the place in October 1950. Framed photos and newspaper clippings tell the story of this place, transformed into a cocktail and tapas bar in 2012. The drinks are classically inspired and have a notably tropical twist, like the Guava Cosmo or the Patria Libre, a simple libation of aged rum served over coconut water ice cubes.

Where to look for information...

We strongly suggest visiting Puerto Rico’s Tourism Department website: www.discoverpuertorico.com as it includes almost everything there is to do on the island. On this website, you can find many tours, attractions, and ideas for things to do that you never thought of. In the meantime, we included some top places to visit in Old San Juan, around San Juan, and around the Island, plus some things to do, a brief on the nightlife and cocktail bars you can find around. Please always double check the information included here as it changes faster than we can update it. We recommend booking tours

Duty-Free and Sales Taxes...

Duty-Free Shops and Sales Taxes – While Puerto Rico's duty-free stores are great, prices are not always low, especially in tourist areas, so it can be a challenge to score bargains at brick-and-mortar stores. You can often bargain with independent vendors and at markets. Always consider our sales tax on goods and services when shopping anywhere else, it is 11.5%; however, handcrafts are not subject to taxes.

Tipping Suggestions...

• Bartenders – $1 a drink or $2 for a more labor-intensive cocktail • Restaurants – 15-20%, depending on the quality of service received • Taxis/rideshares – 15-20% • Shuttle drivers – $1-$2 per person
Gelenekler ve kültür

Local customs you should know about

• Drinking/Smoking – The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking is 18 years old, including buying. • Eating – Meals are meant to be enjoyed, not rushed. Puerto Ricans are also very friendly, so when entering restaurants it is considered polite to greet those around you by saying “buen provecho” (enjoy your meal). • Slow down – Puerto Rico has a very laid-back culture — which often means that local businesses don’t always open or close at the times stated in their hours of operation. Get on “island time” and relax. • Spitting – Spitting is considered rude in any public setting.

Some general tips

• Bacardí rum is the world famously known brand produced here on the island. Don Q rum is just as popular as Bacardí with a subtler flavor. We also produce “Ron del Barrilito” Rum which is not exported to the US being a rare find. When traveling to the US, you're allowed up to four (4) bottles per person at the airport's duty-free shops. So… pick some “Ron del Barrilito” and Don Q rum and some locally-made Palo Viejo rum and chose your favorite. NOTE: Remember if you buy the bottles before getting to the airport you must put them in your checked baggage, do not place them in your carry-on

Some general tips

• “Café Yaucono” is a popular local coffee brand, but we suggest trying the ultra-rich upscale “Alto Grande” brand, whose beans have been cultivated in Puerto Rico’s Lares mountains since 1839. You won’t regret it! • The coquí (“co-kee”)is the local tiny tree frog whose nightly mating call is like our Puerto Rican anthem. Ceramic replicas of the coquí make for unique souvenirs that you won't find in any other place; some souvenirs even replicate the noise!

Boat rides...

For any boat ride, we suggest looking at the weather forecast beforehand or ask for weather conditions directly at the tour company you choose to make sure waves, wind, and the weather forecast overall “appears to be favorable”. When we say “appears to be favorable” is because we are on a tropical island, and weather conditions change unexpectedly and very very fast; it is extremely common to have a “no-rain” forecast and end up running under the rain… :)

Visiting places around the island

Since Fajardo, Rincon, and Parguera are a bit far from Condado, if you don’t have a car and you can get included transportation or transportation for a set fee with the same tour company you choose, go for it because even with Uber the trip can get very expensive. If you are a group, you can also rent a car for the day and split the expense.
