Food Scene

Polish food in the middle of Vienna. Inexpensive traditional polish food, predominantly pirogi, the soups are excellent and polish beer is always good. Karmelitenplaz across the street is a nice square worth exploring, and a nearby open marketplace Karmelitenmarkt is lively and authentic local spot.

It is without a doubt one of the best Japanese restaurants in Vienna, far away from the cheap Asians ones you can find everywhere. A bit on the expensive side but not too extravagantly. Nearby Nestroyplatz is a nice, cosy public square. If they are packed check their takeaway version across the street.

This is a huge 'barge' moored on the Danube canal. Downstairs is a large pool with basic changing facilities, hop I and you can have a swim in the pool, sunk into the canal! Word of warning, although it was a good 30 degrees, the pool was absolutely freezing - forget ideas of a lazy swim! Upstairs was a large sun deck and rustic bar-great for a drink to warm back up! There are also some great places to eat along the canal.

The Danube Canal is a tributary of the River Danube and flows through Vienna . The canal is a great way to view this most beautiful of cities, there's plenty of river cruise boats offering water tours or just walking along the canal banks is a lovely stroll. Must see in summer, especially if you like graffiti, this is Vienna's only legal graffiti zone.

This 99-hectare (245-acre) park, in the 22nd District between the Danube Canal and the Alte Donau (Old Danube), was converted in 1964 from a garbage dump to a park with flowers, shrubs, and walks, as well as a bird sanctuary. You'll find a bee house, an aviary with native and exotic birds, a small-animal paddock, a horse-riding course, playgrounds, and games. An outstanding feature of the park is the Donauturm (Danube Tower), a 253m (830-ft.) tower with two rotating cafe-restaurants from which you have a panoramic view of Vienna.

The Donauinsel is a small island in the Danube river, which resulted when the river was regulated in the last century. Great place to swim in summer due to many beach bars and green areas. A paradise for cyclists, joggers, inline skaters as well as locals who just want to hang out and slow down from the hectic city life. Tourists can rent a bike and take a tour on the island, which is great fun with family and friends. As the island is very flat it is very comfortable to ride a bike there. A great event happens every year in the summer holidays. Then the Donauinsel turns into the biggest free-of-charge open air festival of Europe. A must-see in Vienna.
