Running, Hiking, Walking, Biking

We are going to let you in on one of Lynchburg's best kept secrets! There are miles and miles of paved and unpaved trails in Lynchburg. They are great for walking, running, biking, for singles and families. Visit the map to find parking areas. Some of our favorite access points are located at Percivals Island downtown, or the Awareness Garden at Ed Page Entrance on Langhorne Road. One of the best areas for parking and seeing interesting sites is to access the trail near Amazement Square (also downtown) where about a 3/4 mile walk will take you through a historic train tunnel. https://www.lynchburgparksandrec.com/trails/

Sharp Top and Round Top are two mountains that make up the "Peaks of Otter" in the Blue Ridge Parkway. Both are visible from many locations throughout Lynchburg and surrounding areas. Sharp Top is a "walk-up" mountain that many of us in the area enjoy summiting on a regular basis. To say it is a "walk-up" mountain is a little deceiving. To reach the top requires a good level of fitness and the ability step up and down steep rocks and overall it is a challenging hike, but well worth the effort for those who can manage it. During certain times of the year a shuttle bus will take you part way up if you'd like to skip the easy "walk-up" part and start right in to the more challenging section. The bottom of the mountain is a lovely area to picnic, take a short hike around the lake, or just sit and enjoy the view. The nearby farm trail is one of our favorite hikes where part-way through you walk back into time to a historic farm maintained by the park. This is one of our favorite day trips along with a meal at the Peaks of Otter Restaurant and a stop at an orchard for some produce, cider, or home made jams and jellies. https://www.theoutbound.com/virginia/hiking/hike-the-sharp-top-trail

Food scene

Experience an emersion into the culture that is Lynchburg. Shop local farm produce, home-made goods, and be sure to save some room in your tummies for some baked goodies and a meal from one of the shops. Often while you shop on Saturday morning, you'll hear some live, toe-tap'n Appalachian folk, or blue grass music. This is when you know you are in Lynchburg. The market comes to life on Saturday mornings, especially during the warmer months. Parking is a challenge, but we usually park in one of the many free parking areas down town and enjoy a walk on the bluff walk, or Percival's Island before or after our visit to the market.

We like the food but the location and history are even more attractive. You’ll be just yards from an outdoor park, and the trains, river, and trails that are part of what make downtown Lynchburg a fun place to visit. (We like the peanut butter pie here!)

The BEST Ice cream EVER! Down (westerly direction) the road on Timberlake this food-truck style ice cream place is located in a small outdoor mall just past waterlick road in a parking lot near CVS. You’ll see the ice cream cone from the road. Only open during the warmer months of Spring through Fall . If you like custard-style ice cream, you can’t miss a stop at Mr Goodies! Keep in mind this is entirely an outdoor venue and be prepared for a line, but honestly, waiting in line is part of the fun as you often strike up conversations with your fellow ice-cream lovers from all over the area!

A friendly Place

People are genuinely friendly and helpful in Lynchburg. Feel free to look on-comers full in the face and offer a wide smile and a friendly nod with a big "Hello!" or "How Y'all doin" and you'll fit right in! We Lynchburgers are proud of our home town and always happy to point you in the right direction if needed. With that said, remember that all cities have individuals who like to make trouble, usually at night in neighborhoods you normally would not need to visit. All the same, it's a good idea to travel with someone else in the evening and stay in well-lit, populated areas.

Car travel is the best way to get around

There are many forms of transportation available in Lynchburg. Amtrak, Lynchburg Regional Airport (American Airlines), and a bus system for transportation in and out of Lynchburg. You'll also find Uber, taxi's, and City buses. The best way to get around is by car, although when downtown, we like to park and walk.
