The Athanasaki Archaeological Museum of Volos is one of the oldest Museums in the country. It was built in 1909 with money donated by Alexios Athanasakis from Portaria, Pelion. This is a ground floor neoclassical building with a total area of 870 sq.m. which includes seven exhibition spaces. The Archaeological Museum of Volos hosts archaeological finds from all over Thessaly, from the Paleolithic period to the Roman years. The exhibition is developed in eight rooms on the ground floor of the old and new building and includes findings from the archaeological excavations that began in Thessaly in the early 20th century and continue to this day. Informative texts, drawings and photographs enrich the exhibition by enabling the non-specialist public to be thoroughly informed about the type and use of the archaeological finds, as well as the archeological sites from which these exhibits came.

The Museum is housed in the old Rooftile and Brickworks Factory of Nikolaos and Spyridon Tsalapatas, in Volos (Thessaly). It presents daily life in the factory, as well as all the production stages of different types of bricks and tiles. Its objective is to showcase the historical identity of the town of Volos and to contribute to the preservation and promotion of its industrial heritage. In the factory's installations, the production chain has been reconstituted step by step: trolleys, clay silos, grinders, compressors, cutters, dryers, the imposing Hoffmann kiln, as well as end products, bricks and tiles of different kinds. Thus, the Tsalapatas Factory «functions» once again, bringing to life: 1)All the production stages of bricks and tiles, 2)The daily life of the workmen who were employed at the factory. Your acquaintance with tile- and brick- manufacturing becomes more direct thanks to the models and abundant audiovisual material the Museum possesses.

Dr. Athanasios Koutroumpas is the founder of the Entomological Museum of Volos. Entomology has always been a special interest to Dr. Koutroumpas who started with a collection of Nocturnal Lepidoptera in 1958 while still just 12 years old. Today the museum exhibits approximately 100,000 insects of various taxon and more are constantly added. The majority of insects are butterflies (Lepidoptera) that belong to an extensive collection of more than 40,000 species, subspecies, and races. All specimens are classified according to the international rules of Systematic Entomology and have been collected from all continents by Dr. Koutroumpas during scientific expeditions that he has realized himself. Not only is the Entomological Museum of Volos unique in Greece, but it is the biggest and the most complete private museum in the Balkans.

North of Volos and on the southern slopes of Pelion, Portaria is built at an altitude of 600 meters. A resort since the beginning of the 20th century, it remains one of the most visited villages of Pelion, maintaining its traditional colour with buildings that follow either the Macedonian architecture or the neoclassical one, built by the greek migrants in Egypt. The most classic route in Portaria is the path of the Centaurs, a short route that passes through the most important sights of the settlement. Together with the stops it lasts a maximum of two hours and is enjoyable as it moves in the settlement but also in the greenery of Kakavos creek.

This historical train that used to operate the whole route between Volos and Milies is literally running on the tracks of history. Construction began in 1892 and in 1896 the first part of the line, namely until Ano Lekhonia had been delivered. The rest, all the way up to Milies would have to wait for 1903. The chief engineer of the project was Evaristo De Chirico, father to the well known painter and sculptor Giorgio De Chirico, who was born in Volos. 10am at the Ano Lehonia Railway Station. The little train’s whistle signals the beginning of an unforgettable trip. The ascent on the beautiful slopes of Mt. Pelion has begun, History is about to unfold… This 60cm gauge line, one of the narrowest in the world, is home to the loco and the 4 cars of “Moutzouris”, a common Greek nickname reserved for someone who turns things black, an obvious choice in the days of steam. The terrain between Ano Lehonia and Milies is mountainous, filled with lush vegetation, mainly consisting of plane trees, olives and pine trees. The altitude gained allows for a spectacular view over Pagasitikos bay. Additional to this, the fact that the little train’s maximum speed is but a mere 20km/h allows every visitor to enjoy the spectacular view over gorges, magnificent old bridges and tunnels, thus putting together all the jigsaw bits of this scenic route. The train’s only intermediate stop is at the Ano Gatzea station from which it toils on to Milies and towards the completion of this 15km run in a total of about 90 minutes. Up until Milies, the route is filled with natural beauty and features numerous architectural landmarks, constructions from carved stone and grey limestone that form arched bridges, tunnel entries and retaining walls, an exquisite sample of which is the five-arched stone bridge of Kalorema, in the area of Malaki. On the final approach towards Milies, the scenery becomes more extreme, with the crossing of the steel bridge of Taxiarhis, also known as “De Chirico’s Bridge” being the highlight of this last section. Here, some pretty unique engineering is at work. This is a rare occasion where a train crosses a bridge that is straight, but the tracks that lie on it are actually curved! At the end of the route lies Milies station. Traditional guesthouses and taverns await the visitors, while a cobbled stone footpath takes you up the village’s main square (about 15m). Here the guests can visit the church of Taxiarhis, which was constructed before 1741 and the library which is one of the oldest in Greece or visit the museum of folk art. The next opportunity to admire the most scenic railway line in Greece is at 15:00pm when the little train will start its return towards Ano Lehonia.
