Sightseeing

Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age, although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There is also an audio tour available which worked well for us but does come at an additional cost.

Edinburgh Zoo, formerly the Scottish National Zoological Park, is an 82-acre non-profit zoological park in Corstorphine, a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The land lies on the south facing slopes of Corstorphine Hill, from which it provides extensive views of the city. Built in 1913, and owned by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, it receives over 600,000 visitors a year, which makes it Scotland's second most popular paid-for tourist attraction, after Edinburgh Castle. As well as catering to tourists and locals, the zoo is involved in many scientific pursuits, such as captive breeding of endangered animals, researching into animal behaviour, and active participation in various conservation programs around the world. We love the zoo, it has a great variety of animals and highly recommend the penguin parade which happens once a day.

Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is a major tourist attraction in the Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland located on Castlehill section of the Royal Mile close to Edinburgh Castle. This visitor attraction is now home to over 100 interactive exhibits, including the original Camera Obscura, and is based over five floors including a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Edinburgh. I initially thought this was more of a child orientated attraction, however we had a good giggle in the illusion and the top floor is a great quick stop history tour of the city. We would recommend this when its not cloudy if possible.

Arthur's Seat is an extinct volcano which is the main peak of the group of hills in Edinburgh, Scotland, which form most of Holyrood Park. It is situated just to the east of the city centre, about 1 mile (1.6 km) to the east of Edinburgh Castle. The hill rises above the city providing excellent panoramic views of the city, loch and beyond, is relatively easy to climb, and is popular for hillwalking, we even drove half way up and then walked the rest as we were a little sort on time.

Calton Hill is one of Edinburgh's main hills, set right in the city centre. It is unmistakable with its Athenian acropolis poking above the skyline. When exploring the city I highly recommend a stroll up the stairs to Carlton hill. A significantly easier climb than Arthurs Seat but just as spectacular views.

Stirling Castle, is one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland, both historically and architecturally. The castle sits atop Castle Hill, an intrusive crag, which forms part of the Stirling Sill geological formation. It is surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs, giving it a strong defensive position. Its strategic location, guarding what was, until the 1890s, the farthest downstream crossing of the River Forth, has made it an important fortification in the region from the earliest times.

Nightlife

Nightlife Although the nightlife is very different to Glasgow there are some great hidden bars in Edinburgh. The Dome The Dome has a real wow feeling from the moment you walk through the door. Each room has it own style and the overall décor is exquisite. We love food and drink here and it makes for a great special night. Panda & Sons From the street this looks like any regular barbers but lookout for the great hidden cocktail bar/speakeasy. Bramble Bar and Lounge Similar to the last bar this speakeasy is well hidden but this time in the basement of a seamstress. The cocktail menu is always changing and the bar staff are very knowledgeable. Hoot the Redeemer Our favourite bar in Edinburgh but also the hardest to find. A red door discreetly placed between two shops takes you down to a basement like no other. A must find!

Nightlife Music is the food of love and good times in Glasgow pubs, but the high-octane weekend bar and club scene on Sauchiehall Street is not for everyone. Alternative venues can be found in the West End on Byres Road and Ashton Lane, in the Merchant City, and on Argyle Street. The Teuchters’ Triangle The Park Bar is packed at weekends with dancing to ceilidh bands, the nearby Islay Inn draws the overflow with rockabilly music, and the Ben Nevis across the road is a haven for lovers of whisky and traditional folk music.  Blackfriars A real ale gastropub and live music venue in the Merchant City with a basement nightclub open until 3am Fridays and Saturdays. Bands in the main bar and DJs in the basement playing 1960s hits to the latest sounds.
