City/town information

The Stony Brook Village Center was opened in 1941 and is the first planned, commercial/shopping center in the nation. It was developed by Ward Melville and designed to be the quintessential New England Town. Stony Brook and Setuaket are some of the oldest towns on Long Island. The latter was featured on the show "Turn: Washington's Spies." If you are interested in American history, especially the Revolutionary War period, this is the place for you. Located about 60 miles east of New York City, the town is also surrounded by water, has some great parks and museums. The Long Island Museum is home to a Carriage House museum and art museum. Tours are offered every Wednesday at 2:50 pm starting in front of the Post Office. They cost $5 and are done by the Ward Melville Historic Organization.

Food scene

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I have been for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed. If you get a breakfast dish, the multi-grain bread is amazing! It is American fare at reasonable prices.

Some people come for the food, some for the romance (it has been called the "most romantic spot on Long Island) and some for the ghosts. It was built in 1710 and has been used for a number of purposes. During the American Revolution, British troops took the place over. Annette Williamson was the daughter of the owners at the time. Because the locals did not see her fight the soldiers, they decided she must be a spy and after the British left the area, she was brutally murdered. Her ghost has hauned the place ever since.

This is a great place to stop and get a slice of pizza, sandwich, panini, salad or protein bowl. Everything I have eaten here has been delicious!

Sightseeing

In 1751, James Hallock built the structure that was what would become Mirabelle, the restaurant. In 1835, Jonas Smith bought it for his own use. It wasn't until the 1930s when Jennie Melville began serving tea and sandwiches to visitors. Frank Melville had bought the property in 1929. This tea room would become the main restaurant at the Three Village Inn. The property was expanded to be a hotel and restaurant in 1939.

The Stony Brook Grist Mill was originally built in 1699 but was destroyed by a flood, the victims of which still haunt the place. In 1751, it was rebuilt in its current location. It is across from the Mill Pond (also called the Duck Pond). You can buy duck food at the local gas station or Fratelli's. The mill was an important part of Stony Brook life. Most locals brought their grain to be milled into flour. It also was the site of a local winery and milled grapes into wine. Across the street is the Mill Pond (locals call it the "Duck Pond" and you can buy duck food at the gas station on Main Street on the Village Green.)

That photo is of the historic Gamecock Cottage, which you can see from Sand Street Beach. In the summer, you can enjoy the beach and in the winter you can get great views and a good walk.

The Long Island Museum has a great art museum, a carriage museum, an old schoolhouse and historic cemetery. You may notice a gravestone for "OC" aka "Office Cat." Office Cat was a beloved member of the LIM family and when he passed in the 80s, the staff broke with museum protocol and buried him near the historic cemetary. I went for the first time last week and will be back. So much fun!

Spa & Salon

If you need a little pampering during your visit, this is the perfect place. I just had a facial there and left feeling 10 years younger!
