The picturesque conservation village of Luss (8 miles, 10 minute drive, 1 hour cycle) sits on the western shore of Loch Lomond just off the A82, about 10 miles south of Tarbet. There is an old road direct from Tarbet pier to Luss (no longer used by vehicles), which is used only by walkers and cyclists. Occupation of this area dates back to medieval times, but much of the village you see today was created in the 18th and 19th centuries to house workers from the nearby slate quarries. The neat rows of cottages come alive in spring and summer with elaborate flower displays on all sides as visitors make their way to the loch shore. No visit to Luss is complete without taking in the view from the end of the pier with Ben Lomond standing proudly over Loch Lomond.

Ardgartan, 4miles, 7 minute drive, (meaning the High Garden in Gaelic) is at the heart of an area of vast natural beauty. The forest of Sitka and Norway spruce is an ideal habitat for red squirrel, roe deer, buzzards and owls. Mixed woodland along the many small rivers and burns is home to otters, kingfishers and bats. The trails offer great views for cyclists, walkers or horse riders. If you don’t feel like following the waymarked trails, just wander wherever you fancy... through the forest, across the hills or along the secluded loch shore. https://forestryandland.gov.scot/visit/forest-parks/argyll-forest-park/ardgartan

The village of Cairndow lies in an idyllic setting at the head of Loch Fyne. The village is set just off the A83 west of Tarbet (14 minute drive, 22 miles). In the centre of the village is the Stagecoach Inn which is one of the oldest coaching inns in Scotland. Travellers have been fed and rested here for many centuries. Notable visitors include Queen Victoria, who changed horses here in 1875, Dorothy Wordsworth, sister of the famous poet, and the poet Keats. The Stable Restaurant is built where the original stables were. At the south end of the village lies Kilmorich Parish Church which was built in 1820. The church is one of only two in Scotland to be built with an interesting hexagonal shape and is very picturesque in its surroundings. Ardkinglas Estate and Woodland Garden is found at the very south of the village and is home to a remarkable collection of trees and shrubs from various corners of the globe. The garden is home to several 'champion trees' including the tallest conifer in Britain and is open to the public. There are woodland trails to be explored and visitors can often encounter red squirrels whilst walking in the gardens. Make it a day trip and visit Cairndow, walk though the beautiful gardens of Ardkinglas Estate before heading over to Fyne Ales Farm brewery (https://www.fyneales.com/visit/) where you can sample some local ales, have a pint in the beer garden, peruse the brewery shop or take a brewery tour. Finish the day off with some oyster from Lock Fyne Oyster Bar and Deli (https://www.lochfyne.com/).

Mountains and Munros

The Cobbler (start Succoth car park, Arrochar, 1.5 miles, 3 minute drive). Also known as Ben Arthur - has the most distinctive outline of any mountain in the Southern Highlands and makes a fantastic shorter hillwalk. Extremely popular, the path on the way up has been improved in recent years and once past the initial zig zags makes a pleasant ascent. This route explores both main peaks of the Cobbler before descending on a rugged path between the two. Alternatively the route can be made easier by returning the same way. More experienced climbers will combine with the Ben Narnane, Ben Ime and Ben Vane. https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/the-cobbler.shtml
