Food scene

Five Points is a small shopping and dining district located only a few blocks from the duplex. More than two dozen local restaurants and shops are found here. There's also an old-timey movie theater and a beautiful riverfront park close by. Among our recommended eateries here are Black Sheep, Hawkers Asian Street Food, Al's Pizza, The Bread & Board, Corner Taco and Crane Ramen. And there's a Publix supermarket, and all are within walking distance.

This two-block stretch of eateries at shops in the heart of Avondale are just a few minutes drive from the house. A true neighborhood gathering spot, about a dozens places for a bite to eat or a cool drink line both sides of the street. Among our favorites are Mojo No. 4 (barbecue and bourbon), Biscottis (great daily specials and desserts), Mellow Mushroom (pizza and pasta), and Barrique (French bistro fare). There's also a Peterbrooke Chocolatier and a Whit's Frozen Custard. Yum.

Big Talbot's Boneyard Beach is a favorite Jacksonville retreat and close-kept secret. Three miles of shoreline along the Nassau Sound at the very northeast corner of the city limits form a spectacular visual and ecological wonderland. No skyscrapers are in sight, the beach tucked into Big Talbot Island State Park within the bounds of the federally protected area of the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve. Sculpted by nature, this shoreline boasts 30 foot bluffs and a striking beach peppered with massive driftwood trees.

During the sixteenth century, France was determined to expand its empire. Spain, the world’s leading power, already had a foothold in the Americas, and France wanted a share of the riches the Spanish were gaining through trade and plunder. France’s first attempt to stake a permanent claim in North America was at La Caroline, a settlement near the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida. At first, the settlement was to be a commercial venture, but religious conflict in France broadened the goals. The growing persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots) led their most powerful member, Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, to make a proposal to the crown: the colony could also be a refuge for Huguenots. An exploratory expedition, commanded by Jean Ribault, left France in February 1562. On this voyage, he erected a monument at the River of May (now known as the St. Johns River). Permanent settlement of 200 soldiers and artisans began in 1564, led by Rene de Goulaine de Laudonniere, who had accompanied Ribault on the previous expedition. With help from the Timucua Indians, the colonists began building a village and fort on the river’s south bank, naming the area La Caroline after their king, Charles IX. Today, visitors find stories of exploration, survival, religious disputes, and first contact between American Indians and Europeans. A short walk from the park’s visitor center is recreation of the fort (the original has never been precisely located) situated next to the St. Johns River. Enjoy the serenity of hiking nature trails through native habitats. Admission is free.

Neighborhoods

Riverside is one of the oldest residential areas in Jacksonville. In fact, it's one of its first suburbs. Following the Great Fire of 1901 (a blaze that destroyed much of Downtown) residents began to flock to Riverside and other newer neighborhoods that were close to the city center but also slightly removed. Today, many who live in the neighborhood do so for the exact same reason. One of the few areas of Jax where a car isn't crucial explore the neighborhood, Riverside is peppered with an eclectic mix of shops, businesses, churches, apartments, bungalows and grand houses. Two neighborhood dining hubs—Park & King and 5 Points—are within walking distance from the house and offer everything from tacos and pizza to Asian street fare and shrimp and grits.

Avondale is Riverside's next door neighbor, another of the city's early suburban developments that continues Riverside's gentle flow up the St. Johns River. The two areas are similar, though Riverside is the funkier of the pair. Avondale is loved for its many public parks, huge oak trees, beautiful churches and its namesake shopping and dining center, the Shops of Avondale. Hairs salons, gift shops, jewelry and clothing stores—they're all here.

Medical Center

Many visitors to Jacksonville make the journey to receive care at one of the city's world-class medical centers. The location has already proved popular for those undergoing treatment at the hospital or for those visiting friends and/or family who are. We're close enough for most guests to be able to walk to Ascension, meaning no need to navigate the medical center's enormous parking garages.

Baptist Medical Center is located a short drive away, just over the river in the San Marco neighborhood. Another health care provider that attracts patients from across the Southeast, the complex expanded a couple of years ago with the addition of the Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center. Both Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Children's Specialty Care are connected to the medical center, too.
