Located just 10 minutes from La Roque Gageac the Château de Castelnaud is a medieval fortress in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, overlooking the Dordogne River in Périgord, southern France. Weapon museum is very interesting. This was the stronghold for the English in the 100 year war.

Castelnaud-la-Chapelle
Located just 10 minutes from La Roque Gageac the Château de Castelnaud is a medieval fortress in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, overlooking the Dordogne River in Périgord, southern France. Weapon museum is very interesting. This was the stronghold for the English in the 100 year war.
This 12th Century fortress, one of the most authentic and well-conserved in the region, offers its visitors from the heights of the medieval keep, a magnificent view over the valley of five castles. Rocamadour is a small clifftop village in south-central France. It is known for the Cité Réligieuse complex of religious buildings, accessed via the Grand Escalier staircase. It includes the Chapelle Notre-Dame, with its Black Madonna statue, and the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of St-Sauveur.
On the serene Dordogne River, Bergerac is a medieval town of corbelled houses surrounded by green countryside with vineyards and farms. Bergerac’s medieval quarter is an angular jumble of streets sloping down to the river.
You’ll adore the half-timbered houses, like Maison Gaudra on Rue des Fontaines dating from the 1300s , visit the old town and the Château de Monbazillac for a fun day exploring this wine region and town.

Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves near the village of Montignac, in the department of Dordogne in southwestern France. Over 600 parietal wall paintings cover the interior walls and ceilings of the cave. Duplication of the original drawings (to preserve the originals) make an impressive visit don't miss the museum as well.

The cliff has evidence of use as a shelter for Neanderthal man (50000 BC), Cro-Magnon man (25000 BC) and since then up until the Renaissance in 1588 when the trogolodyte town and fortress that had grown up was destroyed in the Wars of Religion

The cliff has evidence of use as a shelter for Neanderthal man (50000 BC), Cro-Magnon man (25000 BC) and since then up until the Renaissance in 1588 when the trogolodyte town and fortress that had grown up was destroyed in the Wars of Religion
After a vertiginous descent by lift or on foot down to a depth of 103 metres below the ground, you take a trip in a small boat on the underground river through majestic galleries. Then the Grande Pendeloque comes into view - a giant 60 m high stalactite - which seems to hang by a thread, admiring itself in the Rain Lake. After disembarking, you take a walking tour to the Lake of Gours and the Great Dome Cavern whose vault rises 94 metres above you.

Saint-Emilion is a charming medieval village located in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. It is a very unique site were world-famous wineries, fine wine, beautiful architecture and great monuments are a perfect match.
Ideal if you are traveling to Bordeaux . 2 hrs from the house.
A full day here is worth the drive
