A local favorite. While I am not exactly sure of the history, the simple story is that artists used to camp out here and create mural, structure and assorted art pieces. You'll find small castles, dragons made of driftwoods and all sorts of colorful pieces as you look around. And if you were looking for a beach there is one here with great views of the bay bridge and San Francisco.

1 Buchanan StA local favorite. While I am not exactly sure of the history, the simple story is that artists used to camp out here and create mural, structure and assorted art pieces. You'll find small castles, dragons made of driftwoods and all sorts of colorful pieces as you look around. And if you were looking for a beach there is one here with great views of the bay bridge and San Francisco.
This is one of the best overlooks of the bay area! on a clear day you can almost the whole of San Francisco and the surrounding areas.

Skip Ocean beach and go here. This is the ideal picture of the California coast. It has a got beautiful green valley, a usually empty beach and some astounding coastal views. Bonus there is a horse ranch right next to it! Really cannot be beat

Far from Oakland, but if you did one day trip while you were here, for the love of God go here! When you think of California, this is the place you have in your head. Its stunning here and i have never been anywhere quite like this

I'd recommend Rockridge on a few accounts. Awesome food, access to public transport to San Francisco. There's a trader joes nearby and plenty of restaurants, including the locally adored Zachary's pizza, and great coffee. A highlight would be Market hall

If something is going in Oakland its at or around Grand Lake and Lake Merritt. This is where most people think of Oakland when they think of Oakland. Tons of community events go on here. Theres bakeries, food and shops galore. Locals loves just hanging out near the lake and having barbecues.

BART is a lot more expensive than most public transport
BART is the train system in the bay area. However as convenient as it may be, its also very expensive when compared to other large cities. A roundtrip to the SFO airport is 20 dollars per person! It may beat having to park, but personally I'd recommend renting a car out here or at least comparing to uber/lyft prices before using BART

No matter the season, bring a light jacket
I know for those of you from places with real weather you might roll your eyes about California being described as cold, but it can drop up to 30 degrees at night even in the summer out here. My recommendation is a denim jacket or windbreaker. You'll be surprised by the chilly nights!

if you want go to San Francisco, go early in morning
Traffic can be terrible on the weekends! I know its early but it's just so much more enjoyable to drive to the city when its earlier in the day. roughly aim to be there before 10am
