Located in the same building as Club Atom, Harlem has been the mecca of hip-hop culture in Japan since the mid 1990s. If you want to see B-boys and fly girls shakin’ it, as well as some of Japan’s up-and-coming MCs, this is the spot. The tunes are basically straight-up rap with a little R&B mixed in. DJ Hazime and other well-known Japanese spinners often play here.

Space Lab Yellow's short-lived resurrection as Eleven aside, it seemed for a good few years that the Tokyo club scene wouldn't be getting any new venues that were any larger than a shoebox. That changed in late 2011, with the opening of this 1,500-capacity space in Shibuya – run by Global Hearts, the folks behind Daikanyama club Air. Sound Museum Vision spreads the action across four rooms, the largest of which, Gaia, has a sound system loud enough to make your teeth rattle. Regular club nights include the Classics (hip hop), Alien Radio (techno) and Girls Festival, in which all ladies get in for free.

This park was built on reclaimed land surrounded by canals and waterways. Yumenoshima (the “island of dreams”) was born as a landfill in 1974, and for a long time many people thought of it as a place where trash is buried. But today, you would never image a mountain of trash at Yumenoshima Park. This green multipurpose park is a true island of dreams, with a tropical greenhouse dome, athletic field, and the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibit Hall. Centered around a colosseum, the park has approximately 120 cherry trees, and visitors can relax and enjoy the blossoms of spring as well as a variety of wild grasses throughout the year. Since the park used to be a landfill, many naturalized plants can be seen. Arts & Culture

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, was opened in 1995 to systematically research, collect, preserve and display contemporary art that has been created both in Japan and overseas since 1945. Situated in the eastern part of Tokyo, which is also home to Ginza, Akihabara, Tokyo Sky Tree® and the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall, the area surrounding the museum retains some of the charm of old Edo, and standing adjacent to Kiba Park, the large entranceway offers a beautiful view of the greenery. The museum boasts three floors (4,000㎡) of galleries devoted to temporary exhibitions and two floors (3,000㎡) for "MOT Collection" exhibitions, making it the largest modern/contemporary art museum in the country. The temporary exhibition galleries are used to present exhibitions on a wide range of genres centered around contemporary art, including architecture, fashion, design, etc. The "MOT Collection" exhibition galleries present exhibitions of work from our collection of approximately 5,000, that have been acquired either for their historical significance or because they are by young artists representative of the current art scene, offering systematic introductions to postwar art history both at home and abroad or arranged according to various themes. Many of the exhibitions take advantage of the galleries' extremely high ceilings to show large-scale works while the Atrium, which is part of the collection exhibition space, is the venue for the 'Atrium Project' in which spectacular installations are displayed over the course of one year. The museum contains numerous other facilities, such as the museum shop, which offers original items, those connected with exhibitions and numerous books, etc., a library containing approximately 100,000 books on art-related subjects, a relaxing restaurant and a café, making it ideal for an entire day's outing.

Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theater form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in women’s roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style). Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form. After 1868, when Japan opened to Western influence, actors strove to heighten the reputation of Kabuki among the upper classes and to adapt the traditional styles to modern tastes. Today, Kabuki is the most popular of the traditional styles of Japanese drama.
