Food Scene

Many will tell you this is the best restaurant on the Sonoma Coast. A beautiful setting, you'll find excellent food and some very friendly service. Well-traveled Sea Ranchers will tell you that you will not find better martinis anywhere on this planet: very refreshing and not what you would typically expect. Not a fan of martinis? You definitely need to try their cosmopolitans (especially in front of the fireplace). The mushroom ravioli and crab cakes are always very good and be sure not to miss the tomato salad: always delicious. If you think the main dining room menu is a bit pricey, they will let you order from the bar menu in the main dining room as well. Don't miss the bread pudding for dessert.

Many visitors have found this to be their "go-to place" when visiting Sea Ranch. Trinks has a young staff, very energetic but also efficient and very friendly. Try the clam chowder (some of the best you've ever had) and the VERY fresh salads. In fact, everything that is prepared here includes the freshest local, seasonal and organic products around. And according to the owner, the "mom's turkey" is really Mom's homemade cranberry sauce! Be sure to try their Flying Goat Specialty Roast Coffee from a local roasting house in nearby Healdsburg. Also be sure to check out the freshly made gelato...hmmmm! And be sure not to miss the pie (the crust is French pastry dough).

With the staff walking around talking to patrons and making everyone feel like part of the Twofish family, Margaret Smith and Hilla Ahvenainen create art that also happens to be delicious. They opened their doors at Sea Ranch in August 2003 and have just opened up another site at the old Stewart Point Store. Everything on the menu is handmade daily on the premises using fresh ingredients. At 2:30am. each day Twofish begins baking its artisan breads and pastries. Many of the locals will tell you some of the best part of living at Sea Ranch is being able to get ham and cheese croissants at Two Fish. (Sometimes the gooey sticky buns are only available Weds and Thurs ). Be sure to get to Twofish early so you won't be disappointed!

At Black Point Grille at Sea Ranch, expansive windows overlooking the grassy knolls and rolling waves provide the backdrop for a VERY memorable meal. An excellent variety of menu options (which change seasonally and also with daily specials), the new chef here has been very well received in the Sea Ranch community. Salads here are delicious; locals love the kale salad: crisp and large enough to split. Also, the seafood selections are spectacular, especially the Dover sole, halibut, and razor clams over pasta. To complement the food you'll find a good selection of about 150 unique regional wines and the wine list beautifully explained in an extensive wine book. Prices are as would be expected for the view and food quality. The staff are super friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Note: on busy weekends and holiday periods the Black Point Grill is almost always very full, so reservations at least a day in advance are recommended.

The owner (Mark) makes you feel so welcomed here. Simply put, this place is for you if you're looking for delicious food, a clean restaurant, and a friendly staff. Absolutely the best pizza...with excellent crust.... bold flavors that complemented each other well. The ingredients were fresh and well sourced, especially on the chicken pesto pizza. And if you try the great combo with sun dried tomato, black olive and mushroom, guaranteed there will be NO leftovers. Again it is really the down to earth people serving great food that is what will make you come back here. Although the website states they are open Sun-Thurs 4-8 and Fri-Sat 4-9, if the flag is outside in the front they are open for business regardless of what the hours may say here or on their website.

This tiny bakery is done up in pink and turquoise like an up-market cupcake. Franny's Cup and Saucer is worth the drive...from anywhere (and less than half an hour from Sea Ranch!. With the help of her mother, Barbara -- who used to run the bakery and worked at Chez Panisse years ago -- Franny Burkey conjures up the most incredible treats! These ladies are bright and cheery and their wares reflect their optimism and absolute attention to detail in taste and texture and art one eats. You'll find out-of-this world delicate breakfast pastries and desserts; don't miss the AMAZING Sarah Bernhardt cookie with a coconut macaroon base and chocolate ganache. People who have traveled the world will tell you that this is the world's best bakery; don't miss it!

There is definitely something special about this place! Exotic teas, lattes, a back garden and a friendly smile from the owner are also highlights of this little oasis in Anchor Bay. The owner (Deanne) is super kind and friendly who actually cares for her customers. The drinks are well worth the price, you're not paying for the "coastal price hike" you're actually paying for a well-made, hand-crafted drink. It's a cozy spot surrounded by beautiful scenery and friendly locals, you can enjoy an excellent drink here while you enjoy the atmosphere, AND the interior is very clean and elegant. The raised area in the back which gives you a bird's eye view of the shop and the street or if you turn the other way you will see a nice fountain and garden in the back. Besides all the basic coffees, some of the locals will swear by the absolutely perfect eggnog chai! An amazing place to get away from it all :)

If you tell friends you are coming to Sea Ranch, those who have been here will tell you that you MUST go to the Thai Kitchen in Anchor Bay, just 15 minutes from Sea Ranch. They have incredible spring rolls (crisp and fresh, with lots of mint and basil and excellent dipping sauces). The owners are VERY friendly and will go out of their way to make your dining experience special. They've got some delicious stir fry’s and curries --all BIG winners. The duck with curry and the pad Thai seafood is fantastic; wonderful flavors come through on these dishes. The fact that they use authentic recipes with really fresh ingredients makes for a healthy and delightful dining experience. Another nice tidbit: all stir fry dishes are cooked using cholesterol-free rice bran oil and gluten free dishes are prepared with wheat free organic tamari soy sauce. In fact even the fried bananas are organic! If they have salmon and crab as specials, don't miss it (always very local). Other than Singha, all of their beer and wine is locally produced; what's not to like?

A "little hole in the wall" with consistently good tacos, a good salsa bar, reasonable prices and friendly service. The cuisine is closer to Mex-Mex or Cal-mex than Tex-Mex, which is nice: fresh, crisp and less cheesy and greasy than many places. Highlights so far include the fish tacos, beef Milanesa Combo and the Mole Burrito. Tacos come with avocado chunks. Milanesa is micrometer thin and served with fabulous grilled onions and jalapeños. The mole sauce is sublime. One of the best BBQ pork tacos you will EVER have (including in the Bay Area). Their extensive menu looks solid throughout. Of special note may be their breakfast menu, featuring at least eight different Mexican dishes in addition to worldwide standards such as eggs and bacon. The locals always go for the chicken street style tacos and then load up at the incredible salsa bar You'll find an excellence in Mexican food rarely seen on the Northern California coast.

A diamond in the ruff in the small town of Point Arena where you'll find excellent food in a fun environment with good service. Uneda Eat offers delicious big-city foodie eats in a small-town atmosphere. You can zip up here in less than half an hour from Sea Ranch and you won't be disappointed; you can even watch the very talented chef/owner prepare your meal, which adds to the fun. Prices are fair as are the portions, and they have a top notch selection of wines. Both times the food has been very fresh and flavorful -- gorgeous to look at and amazing to taste.-- and we love the fact that they have very creative vegetarian options.

If you love good clam chowder soup, you've just found the place of your dreams! Thick, rich in herbs, and with lots of big clams chunks, you'll enjoy this soup time and time again -- and there is absolutely no way it's out of a can. Locals will tell you that Juan and Sarah in the kitchen here really know exactly what they are doing. Everything is fresh and perfectly prepared, seasoned, cooked and presented. The spicy burger with Angus beef, avocado, picante and cheese is VERY flavorful and juicy; the unusual combination worked well together well and strongly indicated a deft hand and palate in the kitchen. Another favorite there is the basic beer battered fish; many regulars just go simple and get the fish and chips - and substitute the fries with a nice shrimp topped salad, with homemade emulsified balsamic vinaigrette. And one final note: you cannot leave until AFTER you try their to-die-for tiramisu!

A 30 minute drive from Sea Ranch, you'll find nothing but great food and very pleasant servers here (who are VERY attentive). The indoor seating is small, but also extremely cozy. It's not often to find a small restaurant with such good ingredients and unique menu items. An unexpected bonus here is the good variety of coffee drinks. Regulars will swear that the Eggs/Crab Benedict are absolutely the best on anywhere -- and this is one place that does NOT skimp on the portions. If you stop by for lunch, another local favorite here is the jalapeno cream cheese burger (with the side of onion rings): great portions and mouth-watering flavor. Others just come here for the french fries; perfectly crisp and soft on the inside. Another favorite here are the crab cakes: light, rich, and with plenty of crab. If you are able to get a visit in to the lighthouse afterwards (just two miles away) your day will be made!

The people who run the pier are some of the most gracious and wonderful people you will meet. The food is great, the view is wonderful, and the service gracious. Lots of tid-bits of local history fill the place. A very nice place to enjoy a meal after a Pt. Arena lighthouse visit. The bar is one of the highlight of the decor -- it's an old large wood bar that was originally in the original Tommy's Joint in San Francisco -- it's quite elaborate and in great condition. They have a huge selection of brews on tap, and the service is friendly and welcoming. Prices are reasonable. Everything was fresh, including the warm french bread that accompanied our meal. The locals will tell you that there is no clam chowder like this anywhere on the coast: is is out of this world (and definitely not from a can!). Unlike a lot of northeast style chowders, it is not too creamy and it is filled with fresh clams, small potato bits, and other quality ingredients. The muscles were cooked perfectly and served all facing up in concentric circles in a shallow bowl topped with onions and garlic. One final note: many locals refer to this restaurant as "The Cove".

Sightseeing

About a 40 minute drive from Sea Ranch, once you arrive, you will be rewarded with a spectacular views of Magnificent Mendocino Coast ! The Point Arena Historical District is home to one of the tallest lighthouse towers in the west. Not only is the lighthouse at the edge of the cliff, but the rough waters below provide an amazing backdrop for photos. Just be careful when taking photos on the cliffs. On the way to the lighthouse on Lighthouse Road are several turnouts offering hugely picturesque shots of the rugged coastline with the lighthouse in the distance. The lighthouse has some interesting history: initially erected in 1870, it was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, but then rebuilt the following year; apparently it was the first lighthouse to be made of steel and concrete. Every story or so there is a window with a bench for pictures and resting. The climb took roughly 5 minutes. At the top, there is a museum representative who provides a verbal history of the lighthouse and the physical characteristics of the land including its erosion. This is also a great spot for walking and there is a beautiful gazebo that was used in the filming of the movie Forever Young.

Just about a 30 minute drive from Sea Ranch, Fort Ross was a thriving Russian-American Company settlement from 1812 to 1841. This commercial company chartered by Russia's tsarist government controlled all Russian exploration, trade and settlement in the North Pacific, and established permanent settlements in Alaska and California. Fort Ross was the southernmost settlement in the Russian colonization of the North American continent, and was established as an agricultural base to supply Alaska. It was the site of California's first windmills and shipbuilding, and Russian scientists were among the first to record California's cultural and natural history. It's actually quite interesting to walk through and read the history panels, see the displays and learn a bit more about the history and culture of the region. The walk down to the fort compound itself is short (1/4 mile or less) but it's a wonderful stroll through some eucalyptus shaded paths. The buildings themselves were quite interesting and offer an educational glimpse into life back in the day. There is a schoolhouse, living quarters, barn buildings and more which have plaques describing the use and purpose for each building. I believe at certain days/times, they also have some demonstrations or reenactments which would be educational for you or the kiddies as well. Tip: be sure to have $8 in cash read for parking (you'll see the Visitor's Center right by the lot). This is a great place to stop on your way to Sea Ranch!

The Gualala river is a fun and easy kayaking experience and the folks who own this rental are great and it's easy to reserve over the phone. The staff is very knowledgeable and the price is very reasonable; the water is usually very mild. You'll be provided with life-jackets and dry bags as well. Very low key, you can stop on some beaches to eat, walk around, and enjoy the scenery. Adventure Rents provides self-guided rentals in single and tandem kayaks and canoes, for up to a 2-hour paddle, a 2-4 hr. You might even meet one of the very friendly river otters along the way!

Experience the beauty and serenity of The Sea Ranch Chapel a non-denominational sanctuary for prayer, meditation, and spiritual renewal .Located at Mile Marker 55.5 on Highway 1 this is a most unexpected sight that you may buzz by without knowing it's there. That would be a shame since it's one of the most interesting pieces of architectural whimsy you're likely to see along this bucolic part of California. There is an unusual serenity to be found with the swooping design and intimate interior. The elaborate doors with stained glass inlays are made of teak, and the walls inside are redwood. The white plaster ceiling is meant to look like flower petals crowning the small but airy space. All the mosaic flooring and stained glass windows give the impression of natural shapes responding to the sea and the wind. A local couple in Sea Ranch, Robert and Betty Buffum, generously commissioned San Diego architect James T. Hubbell to design it in 1984. Frank Lloyd Wright would have applauded the chapel's conformity with nature. Many visitors consider this to be the highlight of their Sea Ranch visit.

Annapolis is a hidden gem in an overcrowded industry. The Scalabrini family, has been making wine in their own small vineyard since the 1980s and what's cool is that the family is involved in every phase of the business. Their vineyard is very small and they do not make a great volume of wine, but what they do make is excellent. What is very apparent is that they are passionate about making the very best wine possible. They eschew advertising hype as vigorously as they avoid unnatural pesticides. You will often find the owner pouring excellent wine, and sharing wonderful knowledge of the local areas beautiful spots. Regular visitors swear by the 08 Cab and the 07 Pinot Noir; their reds are complex and full bodied but soft on the tannins. Very well developed. When you are planning your visit, be sure to bring a picnic because there are tables out front over looking the valley with absolutely gorgeous views!

On the road from Jenner to Sea Ranch, many will tell you that this 45 minute "detour" is WELL worth it. Many will tell you that you will never have a California Chardonnay like the ones at Hirsch. Following the rugged Sonoma coastline for a spell and then up into the coastal mountains, through so tricky navigation you will discover the amazing Hirsch Vineyards. It's a great way to bring the term "Far Sonoma Coast" to life. David Hirsch founded the vineyard in 1980 to make site-specific wine. You can tell that all efforts have been on the growing of the fruit that makes their wines characteristic of the site year after year. Locals will tell you their favorite is the 2011 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast (505 cases made) which offers bright plantain and green fig flavors with an almost crunchy texture. Another favorite is their 2010 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Reserve (295 cases, $85) which is selected from better parcels in the vineyard as well as a barrel selection in the winery. It is dark and briary in feel, with lots of black cherry, blackberry coulis and singed alder notes. Nothing not to like here!
Hirsch Winery
45075 Bohan Dillon Rd
On the road from Jenner to Sea Ranch, many will tell you that this 45 minute "detour" is WELL worth it. Many will tell you that you will never have a California Chardonnay like the ones at Hirsch. Following the rugged Sonoma coastline for a spell and then up into the coastal mountains, through so tricky navigation you will discover the amazing Hirsch Vineyards. It's a great way to bring the term "Far Sonoma Coast" to life. David Hirsch founded the vineyard in 1980 to make site-specific wine. This is a really cool beach (at mile marker 55.54) that even has a ramp to walk small boats to the ocean. The trailheads are maintained by Sonoma County Regional Parks, this is a wonderful place to go tide-pooling, enjoy a picnic, collect interesting pieces of driftwood, climb rocks, or just take a snooze. You will also find a great sandy cove and sea stacks. And the sound of crashing surf and barking sea lions as well as the invigorating feel of brisk sea air make this a beach you should not miss on your Sea Ranch visit!

The coolest theater in the San Francisco Bay Area isn't in the Bay Area: it's actually located in the mighty town of Pt. Arena just about a 25 minute drive from Sea Ranch. Here you'll find a is a 1928-vintage vaudeville theater where a collection of celluloid heroes have spiffed a little gem of movie-dom. Restored in 1996 to an Art Deco style, state-of-the-art entertainment venue. At $8 a ticket, it's worth saving a movie night during your escape from the big city. Real butter on the popcorn, brewer's yeast, balcony seating, comfy chairs, nice staff, absolutely impeccably clean restrooms....what's not to like? You can also top it off with a full night out afterwards by heading over for a bite to eat at Uneeda Eat right next door! And there is a family movie night deal on Sunday's, such a deal!

You will not find a golf course in California that gives you better "bang for the buck" than The Sea Ranch Golf Links. The staff is enthusiastic, engaging and friendly. This course provides all the unspoiled beauty and challenges a true golfer could hope for in a course. The layout is more challenging than the yardage suggests. This is a championship course, and a very challenging course. You can't go wrong playing a golf course next to the rugged and beautiful North Coast. And Sea Ranch Golf is a great venue with amazing greens and great views. You can tell they put a lot of their energy into maintaining the greens and surrounding areas. The course was fun with great ocean views on the front nine and the back nine had little paths and bridges between the holes that were cool. A tip from locals: you will want book your tee time as early as you can, as can make a huge difference in regards to the weather.

You can not find another comparable selection of videos anywhere...PERIOD! Dave, the owner, is great: very laid back and cool. He's nice, very helpful (especially with kids), and best of all he knows his movies. Be prepared to LOVE the selection! Imagine the Netflix streaming selection on it's best day with new releases, classics as well as popular TV shows. Many regular renters at Sea Ranch make a tradition of coming back to Gualala Video on every visit just to watch old movies that you will never find anywhere else. Looking just for classic and foreign films? They have a huge selection. The store is organized according to awards won, actor/actress, director, country of origin... almost like a treasure hunt every time you go to rent a movie. Looking for an obscure movie you haven't been able to find elsewhere? Ask here -- they have everything under the sun!!!

Don't feel like cooking while at Sea Ranch but would like to relax at Vista Del Mar? Leslie Bates at Savory Coast Fine Catering offers a full line of catering services and has an excellent reputation in the community. For years Leslie owned and operated a small Gualala restaurant she attracted a very loyal following of customers. She had such an incredible reputation that her work was written up in the New York Times! They catered hundreds of events as well as kept the restaurant open 364 days a year. Family requirements demanded that she free up more time, so she sold the restaurant and established Savory Coast Fine Catering ten years ago. Leslie's approach to catering is to find the very freshest ingredients that she possibly can; what's also amazing is that she treats her customers like kinds and queens. She is very flexible in terms of budget and you can be assured that whatever you decide to order, the food will be absolutely delicious!

A wonderful place to stop heading north, about 45-50 minutes before you get to Sea Ranch. The view to the coast is truly beautiful and the wines are delightful. The tasting room is just stunning -- destined to become a don't miss destination for all visitors passing through. It's extremely rare to be able to visit a winery that offers quality wine, and lets you see the ocean all in one shot. Placed high in the hills overlooking the Pacific north of Jenner, the location is utterly exquisite, reminiscent of a Tuscany setting. The tasting room is beautifully designed and the staff are incredibly welcoming. What is truly memorable here are the amazing award winning wines. You will be seduced by the Chardonnay and charmed by the Pinotage, but what is truly unforgettable is the Pinot Noir. It's delicate and subtle and unforgettable, particularly their Sea Slopes variety. If the weather is clear when you visit, you can certainly see Pt. Reyes. If the weather is really clear, you can also see the Farallon islands, just west of San Francisco, about 40 miles away.

At Sea Ranch Mile marker 50.85, a very steep staircase leads visitors to this 1/4 mile-long sandy beach with dramatic waves. Very popular with surfers, this beach is just north of Black Point, a cape that juts out about 250 yards from the shore. If you surf, it can be a fun break to paddle out for during a waist-high pulse, but it can also handle overhead conditions as well. E, SE, and S winds are the most favorable wind conditions, which again makes it a tough one to score with the predominant N and NW winds. Mid-tide is also favorable. If you just want to take in the beach, you'll find plenty of the sea lions, starfish and birds who all consider Black Point Beach their home. The rules at this beach are just as it is with any other beautiful beach: "pack it in, take it out." As with other Sea Ranch beaches, you'll find public access parking maintained by Sonoma County. Remember to dress in layers and wear trail-worthy shoes.

No, you won't find The Inn at Spanish Bay and The Lodge here but at THIS Pebble Beach, (at Sea Ranch Mile marker 52.29) you will find a wonderful beach with small sheltered cove with lots of great tide pools. Check the local tide pools and be sure to get here at low tide when parts of the intertidal region that are usually under water is revealed. Sea urchins, anemones, starfish, and even octopi are especially visible during these times when the moon’s pull is especially strong. In addition to good seal watching, you might even find some good fiddler crabs and snails. Please remember though that tide pools are fragile ecosystems best explored with our eyes, not our hands!

Walk on Beach is the southern end to the three-mile “Bluff Top Trail,” which travels north into 195-acre Gualala Point Regional Park and, ultimately, the mouth of the Gualala River. The Bluff Top walk is filled with the sight of offshore rocks and white sandy beaches, the sound of crashing surf and barking sea lions, and the invigorating feel of brisk sea air. The staircase washed away years ago and is just in the process of being replaced. The views, salty air, and amazing trails make this beach very refreshing and rejuvenating. A reminder that dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet; also access points close at sunset.

Some of the best gelato and sorbeto you will taste anywhere in the world - and that includes Italy! These folks (Marco and Paul).are the finest culinary artists living and working on the coast today and the Northern Coast is fortunate they chosen to practice their delicious art form here. You will not find their gelati and sorbettos anywhere else in the world. They only make enough for the local market and even here you can only find this ambrosia in select outlets. Look for them at Surf Market, Trinks Cafe, the Black Point Grill (at Sea Ranch Lodge) and Anchor Bay Thai Kitchen. During the summer months they often have a mobile gelato cart at the Surf Market in Gualala. They use organic milk and creme, free range chicken eggs, fair trade spices and are very particular about absolutely everything that goes into their product. All of their equipment is the very best and the clean room where they produce their product is spotless. To top it all off, they are just plain nice folks as well.

This is a wonderful store! Lu and Maynard (the owners) are a very nice couple who take pride of ownership and genuinely love what they do. From the start they been focused on offering “wares for your place”, with continued close connection to their industrial design firm LyndonDesign .If you enjoy contemporary design, the useful/practicality/artistic design of kitchen items, then you will not be disappointed. They carry European lines here that I cannot find any where else. Joseph Joseph, Alessi, Marimekko, Design House, Normann, Menu, Govino, Bodum. One of the more unusual ceramic lines is MUD Australia - beautiful/artfully designed ceramics - from serving bowls to plates/vessels that can go from oven to table, keeping your food warm as it is served. This shop is a "must stop" for anyone going into Gualala.

This is a great place to stock up for your feasts while staying at Sea Ranch. They have lots of fresh bread and pastries every morning, and many other local options throughout the store, as well as an excellent selection of vegan options. The locals will tell you that you will have nothing but very pleasant experiences with the quality of the products and the staff. Be sure to check out the very high quality barbecue made by the owner himself during the summer months. And if you are looking for fresh caught salmon, often you'll find it right off the boat here. In addition to making their own sauces and dressings, they have a good selection of organic products as well as organic produce. Perhaps you are looking for a good tri-tip sandwich? This is the place! Good crusty roll, perfectly cooked tri-tip that isn't drowning in sauce. In fact, the sauce (a mix of BBQ, SoyVey Teriaki, grilled onions and Sweet Sweet Love) is just a small part of the taste explosion. At $8, it is totally worth it. Did we mentioned their amazing wine selection? Many will tell you their sommelier is one of the best you will EVER meet!
