Drinks & Nightlife

Really great bar with a backroom that hosts bands, stand-up comedy and theater. They have a small backyard but the bar itself is really the thing to come for - there is kitsch everywhere and some really crazy video montages on all the televisions. The first Friday of every month there is a Funk and Soul dance party in the backroom - really good time.

If you're into soccer, or I guess I should say "footy," this is probably one of the most popular spots in the city. Any game that can be gotten on television, or the Roku, can be watched here. They even open early on the weekends if there is a game that starts at 8am and serve coffee and breakfast. They don't only show soccer though, all other sports get their time, too. It gets quite packed on NFL Sundays and for playoffs of whatever sport - basketball, hockey, baseball, rugby. You name it. And the food is pretty good. Try the nachos.

Parks & Nature

Beautiful Park a little over a mile away from the apartment . If you're a runner or cycler, there is a 3.3 mile path that goes all the way around the park that's got some good hills and a beautiful view of the lake. Also a great place for a picnic or to throw a frisbee around in the warmer weather. It's the site of Celebrate Brooklyn every spring/summer that brings some of the most exciting live music to the area for a combination of free and paid shows. Also, there are turtles in the lake which I am always very excited about.

I call this "budget friendly" because it is free on Tuesdays. All other days it costs $12 for adults which might seem a little steep but it's well worth it. If you happen to be in town in May, they have a really fun cherry blossom festival and then in October they do a chili pepper festival that brings together people from all over who make all kinds of unnecessarily spicy things. It's really fun. But otherwise, just a really great place to walk around and smell the flowers.

Food Scene

This is a small Eastern European restaurant that is renowned for its burgers. I'm a vegetarian, so I don't know much about that, but their veggie burgers are great - they have an amazing black bean burger and the Bklyn Beet is super tasty - and they have a lot of very inventive salads. They also generally have both a eat and veggie options for pierogi's AND they make their own beet catsup. Good beer list mostly focused on Eastern European breweries and styles and a decent wine list. Casual. I recommend you sit at the bar.

Incredible Brooklyn slice spot. Seriously one of the best slices you'll find. I mean, obviously, the pies are to die for but how often is a person able to eat a whole pie? But I mean, sure, go for it. But don't say I didn't warn you.

Really good Italian food on Court Street. If you go there for lunch it is pretty quiet but dinner is really fun. If you sit at the bar you can see into the kitchen which is incredibly small - it's amazing to watch what all they can pull out of such a limited space. They also have a good wine list and a beautiful backyard.

Essentials

24-hour laundry. They have free WiFi and AC in the summer (although it stills gets a little bit warm in there). The machines are not coin operated so you have to have a laundry card to do the wash. There is one on the dresser. If there is money on it from the previous guest kindly refill after using.

Whole sale fruit and vegetable market. They have recently added a lot more stock so you can purchase most of the items you might need for your stay. Be careful crossing 3rd Avenue - the lights are pretty short for pedestrians and the visibility is low on the west side of the street - and do check all expiration dates on anything you buy.

Sightseeing

The Staten Island Ferry runs from Whitehall Street to Staten Island and back and is FREE. You get amazing views of The Statue of Liberty, downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hop off the Ferry if you want to check out the Staten Island 9/11 Memorial. It's a lot smaller than the one at Ground Zero but a lot of the first responders were from Staten Island and are remembered there. It's a very powerful memorial. If you are there in the summertime, you can also catch a Staten Island Yankees game. Minor league baseball is a lot of fun in New York and a lot more convenient and affordable.
