Experience Old Town Cottonwood, then take a walk on the Jail Trail. It starts right at the Old Town curve on Main Street (there is plenty of parking). You can walk or bike from here, all the way to Dead Horse Ranch State Park. We did!

Up Oak Creek Canyon between Sedona and Flagstaff - a great place for both kids and parents alike. It can get very busy here, so go very early, or at off peak times. Be careful, they don't call it 'slick rock' for nothing! And check to make sure the water quality is ok too ... 35-45 minutes from the house

For those with a jeep or 4x4 and high clearance, a ride up to the overlook is an adventure in itself. Lots of trailheads along the way, fantastic views. 30-40 minutes from the house to where the pavement ends.

A picture tells a thousand words, doesn't it? Paved easy walk to an iconic site along famous Oak Creek. A must see, as the drive to get there down the Red Rock Loop road, is one of the best! 30 minutes from the house.

Out Dry Creek road, this trail is short with several long switchbacks. The views from the top and absolutely spectacular. A great early morning trail in the hotter months, mostly in the shade.

Cottonwood is the backbone of the Verde Valley. It is where most the area locals live, and where you will find stores such as Home Depot and Walmart, which Sedona does not have.
Old Town Cottonwood is up and coming! It has evolved greatly in the past years, into a sweet local home as well as a great tourist location. We hope you like it as much as we do. About 10 minutes from the house.

Flagstaff is nice and cool in the Pines, at over 7000 ft elevation. It is the gateway to the Grand Canyon, about another hour. Flagstaff is about 1 hour drive from the house.

If you want to avoid that, take Hwy 260 to Cottonwood, then take Hwy 89 up to Sedona from the West. Still beautiful.

The Village is the first place you come to when entering Sedona on Hwy 179, via I 17 north from Phoenix. The views from there to Sedona are absolutely spectacular and non-stop, but the traffic can often be "stop n go". So try to have plenty of time, not be in a hurry, and just enjoy the scenery!
If you want to avoid that, take Hwy 260 to Cottonwood, then take Hwy 89 up to Sedona from the West. Still beautiful.
Sightseeing
See northern AZ by Rail - take a train to the Grand Canyon. It takes almost as long to get to Williams, as it does to the GC from the house via I-17 ... but its all about the experience.

If you want to avoid the majority of the traffic jams on Hwy 179, enter Sedona from the West - on Hwy 89A . From I-17 north, take Hwy 260 to Cottonwood, then take Hwy 89 up to Sedona.
However, when you have plenty of time and are not worried about sitting in traffic, the views on Hwy 179 are absolutely spectacular. Its a must see in and of itself when you are fresh and not tired.

What to bring
The key to traveling in the Southwest is layering. In the summer, bring light weight layers in case it gets a little chilly at night. In the Winter, it can get cold with bitter winds. If the sun is out and the wind is calm, you will want to peel it all off. Bring a wide brim hat, and a good pair of tennis/hiking shoes, wind breaker, & synthetic layers.
For the House - just pack your clothes, personals, & food. If its shared, we likely have it. The house is very well stocked with stuff like shampoo, conditioner, TP, kitchen supplies, and if missing, town is just 5 minutes away.
