The Metro trains are the best way to travel into DC.
Recommended train travel times, to avoid rush hour, are trains between 9AM-4PM and after 7:30PM. To park a car at a metro station costs $4 per day. But a SECRET FREE PARKING SPACE is to park at Tysons Corner Mall at the parking lot and to take the Silver Line train from there into DC.

The terrace floor of the Kennedy Center
There is an amazing 360 degree view of Virginia and Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center. When you go in, take the elevators to the T Floor. Walk out the glass doors to the rooftop to see the sights that is completely free. This is a local secret that I hope you can enjoy. Parking is not free, however if you visit on Sundays or in the evenings after 8PM, there is free street parking close by.
