Tucked away on the lower level 111 Lombard Avenue and accessed via an outdoor staircase next to the main doors of the building, this Winnipeg institution is famous for classic sandwiches. We loved the BLT special that came with the homemade coleslaw, but the bagel with cream cheese, chicken soup with mozza balls, Reuben sandwiches or the ever-classic pastrami on local City rye bread are on our « must-try » list. Unpretentious, clean, attentive service, there are so many reasons to go back. Closed on weekends unfortunately, but open weekdays for breakfast and lunch (7am to 2pm).

Phở Hoàng has earned a loyal following in a city that knows its Vietnamese cuisine, and in a neighbourhood surrounded by competitors. Piping-hot pho, made with fresh ingredients and homemade beef and pork broth, take centre stage. A warm welcome and great prices will have you coming back for an encore. Last visited: 12.12.2019.

This locally-owned Mexican restaurant doubles as a night club, which explains the vast open space between the bar and the tables. The menu has all the classic dished, including chicken fajitas that we really enjoyed. Prices are a bit steep, but the portions are generous. La Roca, both the restaurant and the night club, seems to appeal to a 30-something afterwork crowd. An evening meal set us back 40$ per person including a shared entree as well as a glass of wine or a beer each.

"Sal's" are a Winnipeg institution. This local chain boasts diners that remain, in most ways, firmly anchored in the seventies. The Exchange District outlet is this a bit at odds with the neoclassical columns and arcades of the cavernous dining room it occupies. Smiles and kindness abound, and who can go wrong with the bacon-and-eggs and bottomless coffee at rock-bottom prices? Last visit: 24.2.2019.

With its cozy patio overlooking Corydon, the Roost is a haven for people-watching. Arrive early on Fridays to join after-work locals for happy hour prices on locally-inspired, made-for-sharing dishes. Throw in amazing cocktails, LGBTQ*-friendly staff and patrons - it says so on their menu - and decently-priced food, you have more than enough reasons to drop by the Roost. About $80 for two, including three sharing dishes, two cocktails, taxes and tip. Last visit: September 23, 2019.

We were encouraged to try this night spot by a local columnist who included the Mitchell Block on his list of "comfort food" havens across Winnipeg. A night club with a menu? We had to check it out. We took our time heading up the steep stairs leading to this atmospheric night club on McDiarmid Street in the East Exchange. We were directed to seats in the bar section, rather than at one of the many empty tables (they were apparently all reserved). The sofa-style chairs were far apart, and made conversation difficult. The underwhelming mac'n cheese was the last thing on our mind as we concluded the evening with a promise to come back at a future date to try the the cocktails and dancing rather than the menu. Last visit: November 22, 2019.

Friends and family have been raving about this local take-away pizza chain, so we finally decided to give it a try when we needed to feed our 20+ member extended family. We phoned ahead, ordering four extra-large pizzas with two toppings on each, among which: pepperoni and mushroom, ham and pineapple, as well as tomatoes and artichokes. Our order was ready when we arrived at the appointed time. Payment by credit card was easy, and the staff were pleasant and efficient. The pizzas received an enthusiastic welcome, and our crew plowed through all four in no time. Though not crisp'n chewy as we I like them, the pizza's are on par or better than any other local or international chain. Last visit: June 14, 2019

Don't blink when you walk down Stafford near Grosvenor, or you might miss Close Company, a foody gem that packs a huge culinary punch. Once you secure a reservation (at least a week ahead, don't even try showing up without one), you'll be seated at one of three tables. The menu is made up of sharing dishes, and the two staff members - a cook and a waiter - were efficient and friendly as you might imagine in such intimate conditions. We tried the ceviche (wow!) the meatballs (good), and the tartare (yum!). The house white, a sauvignon blanc, was also well worth the almost 12$ per glass price tag. We were charged for bread - heart-breaking or even insulting for Francophones - but found that the almost $30 we paid per person (with taxes and tip) was money well spent. Latest visit: May 16, 2019.

Les Saj is located in a sad strip mall in the heart of a sad commercial district (Polo Park). That said, if you happen to be in the neighbourhood for shopping you would be well-advised to stop by Les Saj for lunch. Their bread is baked fresh on order, and the falafels (in a shwarma) are particularly good. Kind owners. Last updated: April 17 2020.

East India Company has an enviable reputation in Winnipeg: it's consistently high quality dishes have been delighting customers for over 20 years. New Delhi Oberoi-trained chefs prepare the ever-popular buffet (less expensive at lunchtime) with a stunning array of dishes both vegetarian and meat-filled. Burg Mahar, Palak Paneer and Chickpea Korma are our favourites, but its hard to find fault with any of their dishes.

Manitoba is a wine-producing province. Shrugging Doctor winery produces a surprisingly good dry white as well as a rosée using grapes produced in the Pembina Valley, near the US border. A bargain at $14/bottle, "The Great Vandal" 2017 is complex with citrus notes. Shrugging Doctor, despite the incongruous name and offbeat labels, produces a series of ciders, fruit-based wine, and meads. Check out their products online, at their facility near Polo Park, or at many Liquor Marts. Last update: April 17 2020.
