Waterfront Drinks & Dining

One of the best parts of traveling alone is you can truly soak up the world around you, so enjoy some waves while you grab a drink or a bite!
Sushi in Mission Beach with great happy hour and sunset views. For an undisturbed solo meal, ask to be seated on a spot along the glass where they have great bar-high seating overlooking the beach or for a livelier solo experience, sit at the bar at the corner nearest the beach for a great view, fast service and friendly staff and fellow patrons. Happy Hour 2-5 Weekdays with $5ish drinks and bites and live music starting at 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Three places in one for the perfect way to enjoy an indulgent meal in a vibrant solo-friendly environment with food served on all floors by the Michelin-starred "California Modern" formal restaurant on the first floor. Get there before well sunset to snag a spot on the third floor "Ocean Terrace" to enjoy a cocktail as you watch a beautiful sky over the La Jolla cove. I like their tropical spin on a G&T served properly with peppercorns! George's Rooftop is famous for their fish tacos, but I love their curried mussels and their lobster roll is just an explosion of seafood decadence. Enjoy a fantastic dinner there or move to the swanky "Level2" craft cocktail lounger below as you watch the sky turn dark. If the night is still young, go next door for live music and more great views at Eddie V's terrace.

Right on the Pacific Beach boardwalk for great people watching and an epic sunset framed by crystal pier. Snag a seat at the inside bar which is open to the outdoors and will have you facing the ocean or grab the last seat at the end of the outdoor bar to turn around comfortably and have a view of the beautiful restaurant and the boardwalk. Wonderful coastal cuisine including a great raw bar from oysters to sushi. Thoughtful wine list, sake selection and craft cocktails. Make a rezzy to ensure you get a spot on the glass, but there are still wonderful views from anywhere in the place. I love their whole-fish if they have it and you really can't go wrong with any of their appetizers! Happy Hour weekdays from 4-pm with $5 wine, bubbly, sake, beer and well drinks and 1/2 price select bottles of wine on Thursdays!

Food scene

I love a good date night... but my favorite is with me, myself, and I. These restaurants have remarkable dining experiences that will have you so engulfed in your meal you'll be glad no one is distracting you!
An oasis of elegance in bohemian Ocean Beach a quick drive to the south, Bo Beau is cozy bistro for a candlelight dinner with fantastic "French comfort cuisine" that is creatively gourmet but unpretentious with an extensive wine list. Their Mac & Cheese is a House fave. I love the flatbreads. I love the beet/burrada/jalapeño and recently had a fantastic special that was a very delicious twist on a Croque Madame where the rich flavors including Dijon are so much more pronounced on the thin flatbread crust. Opens at 4pm, ask for the table at the end of the bar by the shelves with the wine glasses (when you enter it’s straight ahead to your right past the bar like a lowered extension of the bar). Grab a seat at the bar... you'll love the bartender! After dinner, ask the bartender to direct you over to 3rd Corner Wine Bar across the street for their reverse happy hour with wine and sangria specials or grab a bottle to go from their expansive wine shop.

Wonderful Canape Menu to get your appetite awakened for a truly unique menu. I love the peanut macaron, corn dog, fig tart, and beef tartar served in a little cone. These are one-bite canapes so you want one per person... trust me they are literally one bite. Can't go wrong making an entire meal out of an assortment of these little guys, but if you want an entree ask the servers for a recommendation because they're all very helpful! If they have the seasonal squash stuffed ravioli-like dish in the thai curry sauce because its unforgettable and you definitely need that in your life! As most of the tables are small, this restaurant is largely solo diners or maybe a double-date at most. I like eating at one of the tables in the bar perched over the restaurant or at the bar where the staff is usually very engaging if you strike up a conversation. They LOVE talking about the menu! Little Italy closes early in general, but this place even more so. Go across the street to Nolita Hall to watch the planes land over your head... yes literally! Snag a drink a block away at Born & Raised if its still early enough, otherwise head to False Idol a much-acclaimed Tiki speakeasy (yes its about exactly as it sounds) hidden inside Craft & Commerce... entrance concealed just to the left of the bar when you enter if the hostess isn't there. But you may have to specifically ask for False Idol in true speakeasy style.

This is probably the hands down favorite in the city with a ridiculously opulent build-out with grandiose booth seating, great music and a lively atmosphere that will make you feel like you just stepped into the Great Gatsby. I personally like dining at the downstairs bar even with company making it also a great spot to dine alone. The menu and wine list are superb and they always have both black and white truffles when in season. After dinner, make your way upstairs to the very posh rooftop bar. Little Italy closes down early, but you can finish your night at nearby False Idol, a tiki speakeasy hidden inside Craft & Commerce. Ask someone inside to show you the entrance concealed just to the left of the bar when you enter. It's one of the rare places in the area open until closing time.

As a frequent solo traveler myself, I've explored San Diego a lot by myself and these are some of my favorite things beyond the usual tourist experiences that will make your trip memorable in unique ways you weren't even planning on!
Sip or Eat as planes land over your head! Literally! Nolita Hall takes advantage of being directly under the flight path during final descent by having hilarious sayings on a rapidly updating board that tells you the origin and flight data of each incoming plane. Enjoy wonderful food and craft cocktails. The bar area is wonderful lounge for solo travelers or small groups and the restaurant area is lively and has unexpected games like shuffleboard! Great for that night when you want to play it by ear or I love to take friends here for their last meal or drink before their flight... you'll likely see a lot of suitcases around the room!

Potato Chip rock is a popular tourist destination but its great for the solo traveler because the prime photo op is usually surrounded by tourists and several solo hikers also hoping someone will help them snap the coveted picture that's impossible without help! It's also an easier hike with lots of traffic making it a safe outing even for those who aren't usually the hiking type.

Casual Dining

With a rooftop lookout built over the cafe with a single row of bar seating facing the water, this place is perfect for a solo bite usually undisturbed as I have only encountered another person upstairs once! Breakfast, burgers and beach views! Woody’s is a fave among locals and tourists alike. Counter service and it can take awhile for your food to come but it’s worth it! Burgers are yummy but they also have healthy snacks like smoothies! Ssssshhhh they have off-the-menu donut holes every morning!
