We do this all the time as a family. 1 hour fast mountain bike ride or you can walk the loop track. Look up Tongariro River Trail. You can hire Bikes locally in Turangi.
Tongariro River
Sightseeing loop track
Short drive past Turangi up in the hills behind is this amazing loop track. There is a great beach halfway around, take a picnic, go for a swim and feed the ducks.
Rotopounamu Track
Te Ponanga Saddle RoadGo to Kiko Road, just 5 mins down the road, drive right to the end of this road deep into the forest, takes a good half hour and the road gets quite rough. Not recommended for low profile tyres!! There is an amazing loop track walk takes about an hour to do, easy going, beautiful forest. Is quite cold in there even in summer! Take layers. Long drop toilet at car park.

Sightseeing Incredible views
This is a hard walk! Only for the fit and strong. 1 hour directly up the mountain this is worth the hard work. We love this walk!

Our kids love this place and so do we! Hydro slides for the adventurous or relax in the hot pools. The de Brett’s day spa is also worth a visit. The couples massage we recommend!

We visit Whakapapa every year to ski and snowboard in winter. Get up early if you want to ski to get a car park as it gets really full and difficult to navigate crowds. We get up at 6:30 on days we want to ski. It’s 40 mins to the top of the mountain. We enjoy a hot chocolate and breakfast in the cafe while we wait for the chairs to open. Only worth it if you get up early. Very expensive as an activity.

We LOVED this horse trek through local Maori land and the river. Awesome trek, great people and not too expensive. Only a 5 minute drive.
