Route 18 on Nicollet or Route 11 on 5th Avenue S get ya downtown quickly.
Route 23 takes ya to the 38th St Station where you can hop the train to go south to Mall of America or North to downtown.

Downloading the Metro app is the easiest way to pay
The Metro app allows you to pay for bus and train fare (they are the same ticket in the Cities). You just have to show your ticket in the app to the driver.
Trains sometimes have transit police checking tickets in which case you show them.
