Ask anyone from Iowa City what one of their favorite pizza places is and you'll likely hear Pagliai's (Pall-ee-eyes). I remember my dad holding me up to watch the pizza makers throwing the dough up in the air. Their pizza is just as good today as it was many years ago. Note - they do not deliver, however you can get frozen pizzas. Old-school, family-owned joint serving thin-crust pizzas made from family recipes & beer. The Old Capitol Building, the state's first capitol, now houses a museum of local history. The adjacent University of Iowa Museum of Natural History features prehistoric stone tools and taxidermy. By the Iowa River, City Park has ponds and sports facilities. East, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum displays objects and photos tracing the life of the 31st U.S. president.
Our Mission The Old Capitol Museum seeks to educate the university, local, and national communities on the continuing significance of the humanities, as an invigorated and distinguished building that serves as a center of culture and civic discourse for the State of Iowa, through public outreach initiatives, educational programming, exhibitions, and academic scholarship. Our Place on Campus Together, Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History (next door in Macbride Hall) form the University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums. Old Capitol Museum has been in operation since 1976, when the building reopened after a major renovation. It is the only National Historic Landmark in Iowa City. Throughout its long history, the building has served as a seat of the territorial and state governments, a university building serving numerous schools and colleges, administrative offices, and finally a museum. Today, we serve our university and Iowa City communities through beautifully restored historic interiors, temporary exhibits, programming, and education resources for all ages. Our Building The Old Capitol dome is the University of Iowa's logo and remains one of the most recognizable images and landmarks in the state of Iowa. In the 175 years since the cornerstone was laid, the building has undergone multiple additions and renovations, as well as surviving a major fire in 2001. The Iowa City Public Library was established in 1896 to serve the people of Iowa City. Mission statement: The City of Literature works to advance its mission of celebrating and supporting literature on a local, regional, national, and international level, connecting readers and writers through the power of story. The Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organization is a nonprofit 501(c)3 that manages the Iowa City area’s designation as a UNESCO City of Literature. How could a small city in the center of the American heartland have such a wide-ranging impact on creative writing? The answer is that Iowa City, for its size, may be the most literary city on earth. It has a unique set of influential literary institutions, which explore new ways to teach and support writers. At the same time, it has long been, quite simply, a place for writers: a haven, a destination, a proving ground, and a nursery. ICPL serves a population 69,000 residents of Iowa City. ICPL has approximately 67,000 cardholders. Address: 123 S Linn St, Iowa City, IA 52240 Phone: (319) 356-5200 Founded: 1896
