A Natural Wonder The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.

Charley’s Chocolate is unique in Australia and one of only a few places in the world where you can experience the whole journey of chocolate from “Tree to Bar”. Charley’s is real and genuine! It is deliberately NOT a theme park, it’s authentic and even a little “raw”. It’s run by passionate people, who want you to share their chocolate story. The tour is fun, very much “hands on” and hugely informative. See more information in your in house manual and the enjoy the chocolate your host has left in your welcome basket

Stretching from Daintree Village across the river, the Daintree encompasses Cape Kimberley, Cow Bay, Thornton's Peak, Cooper Creek, Thornton Beach, Noah Valley, Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield Track to the north. This is the home of the world's oldest surviving rainforest with examples of plant species that existed millions of years ago. Be dwarfed by king ferns and giant bull kauri pines, watch for the flash of blue that gives away the cassowary moving through the evergreen forest or discover tiny fish in cool freshwater pools. Winding for 140 kilometres, the Daintree River is one of the longest rivers on Australia's east coast providing diverse habitats for many species. Cruise along it to spot prehistoric crocodiles and colourful birds or join a fishing charter to haul in a mighty barramundi. Guided walks, Four Wheel Drive or Eight Wheel Drive tours also give an insight into this special environment. Sir David Attenborough described the Daintree rainforest as extraordinary after a recent visit filming in the area, telling viewers around the world he was particularly impressed with the region's diverse birdlife. Daintree village has a number of eateries, artists' studios, local souvenir shops and a general store with a post office, bottle shop and information and tour booking centre. It is the last stop-off before the Daintree River Ferry which takes you across the river even deeper into the Daintree rainforest.

Rugged rainforest-clad mountains and gorges, tumbling waterfalls, varied wildlife, easy access and a fascinating history make Barron Gorge National Park one of Queensland’s most popular parks. The park extends from the coastal lowlands (Lake Placid) to the elevated regions of the Atherton Tableland (near Kuranda), and lies within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The Barron River dominates the park. Rising from the rainforests of Mount Hypipamee, the river winds 60 kilometres across the Atherton Tableland and enters the deeply-incised Barron Gorge, and falls 250 metres onto the coastal lowlands before flowing into the Coral Sea. During the wet season, floodwaters often create a spectacular sight at Barron Falls, best viewed from the Din Din Barron Falls lookout near Kuranda.

Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Babinda Boulders is an icon Cairns attraction and popular swimming hole and tourist attraction south of Cairns. It is a classic example of the fast flowing tropical creeks in the area that are perfect for afternoon dips in the cool water to combat the tropical heat. The creek is lined with huge boulders and the clear fresh water weaves between the obstacles to fill large pools where people can swim. Visitors to the Babinda Boulders are often amazed that the water is quite cool, even during mid-summer. Just behind the Boulders is Mt Bartle Frere, Queensland's tallest mountain, from which Babinda Creek's cool water originates. The section of the creek where the water rushes over massive granite boulders, smoothing and shaping them, is referred to as the Babinda Boulders. Just an hour south of Cairns, a tropical haven awaits. Nestled in the foothills of Queensland’s highest mountain range, Bartle Frere, Josephine Falls is often referred to as “nature’s playground” with a natural rockslide being the main attraction of the beautiful cascades. It’s an easy 600m walk to the bottom swimming hole with wheelchair access available to the viewing platform at the top pool. While it looks tempting, swimming in the top pool is prohibited but there’s plenty of space at the bottom pool to spread out.

The bustling township of Atherton is 95 km south-west from Cairns, travelling via the Kuranda Range. Atherton is on the Kennedy Highway and the town centre includes a comprehensive shopping centre, showgrounds, hospital and Olympic size swimming pool. Atherton is fast becoming the ultimate cycling destination with the growing popularity of the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park, a network of world-class, purpose-built, single-track mountain bike trails located in the Herberton Range State Forest and easy access from Atherton’s CBD. From its beginnings as a timber workers camp and staging post between the tin mines and the coast, Atherton has blossomed like its trademark jacaranda trees. Today this diverse regional service centre has so many well-presented homes and streets it’s regularly in the running for Australia’s Tidy Town awards. The region has a wealth of artists whose works are best seen at the Tablelands Regional Gallery. Any visit should include checking out the wonderful pre-war Barron Valley Hotel, browsing through the town’s quaint shops like Atherton Antiques & Australiana and enjoying a picnic at Hallorans Hill. And right in the middle of town is one of the most remarkable and novel attractions anywhere in Australia. Share one man’s passion for crystals and fossils at the Crystal Caves in Main Street. Journey through 300m2 of tunnels and grottos that Rene Boissevain built to feature his million year old natural crystals and prehistoric fossils. Take a self-guided tour and marvel at the interactive displays which you can touch. Take photographs of the crystals, crawl around the exhibits and become a geological explorer. There’s even on opportunity to crack a geode – kind of a Kinder Surprise volcanic egg. Just out of Atherton is an attraction which combines the two of the world’s taste sensations – dairy and chocolate. Savour the gourmet cheeses and chocolates, and let the children see how milk is made! Also close by is Hasties Swamp, a seasonal wetland and national park which has an annual cycle of wet and dry, attracting a range of more than 300 resident and migrant birds. The two-storey Nyleta (the park’s Indigenous name) Wetlands Bird Hide has wheelchair access on the lower section.

To the south of Cairns is the highest freestanding natural pyramid in the world. You could be forgiven for thinking it is a tree covered man-made pyramid – the shape is almost perfect. But no, this is a natural phenomenon that is one of the most distinctive landmarks for the small sugar-farming town of Gordonvale. Walsh's Pyramid is used for hiking. The mountain is 922 metres tall, and quite steep so you need to be fit and healthy to make the climb. For experienced hikers, the ascent and descent can take approximately 3 hours. Allow for longer if you are not an avid hiker or if you are taking kids with you. (Expect complaining about sore legs, and “when are we going to be at the top…” after about 1 hour)

For the best steak in town, head to Waterbar & Grill. Located on Cairns Marlin Marina, guests will love both the waterfront views and menu. The grain-fed and aged organic beef is sourced locally from Morganbury Meat Company on the Atherton Tablelands. Many of the Waterbar & Grill’s dishes boast African and Portuguese flavours.
