I'm a fan of sipping an Aperol Spritz on the rooftop patio by the fire pit around sunset. They also specialize in gin and tonic cocktails, fancy fixins cart and all. Dinner here will be a splurge, but well worth it.

This is the open air mall for which Boulder is famous. Along with plenty of restaurants, shops, and outdoor seating there is usually someone busking...personal favorites are the guy who folds himself into a tiny plexiglass box and the kid that tap dances and plays the trumpet.

At just 2 miles away, this is literally the closest restaurant to the house. And lucky us, because it has a wonderful bar area with a fireplace and several nooks in which to get cozy and play some cards. The restaurant itself is a fairly formal affair with white tablecloth, etc. It's a very popular venue for weddings and events. They have a delicious champagne brunch on Sundays until 1p.

This is a really unique place. It's a 13 mile drive up into the foothills west of Boulder, and has a set multi-course menu. Grab a drink at the bar and warm up by their many fireplaces while you look at the evening's offerings before you are seated. Be sure to check their website or call ahead, reservations are recommended if not required and hours vary by day and time of year.

AKA The Merc, this is the only spot to grab a bite and a beer (or a Jimtown-sized double mimosa) in Jamestown, but it's a pretty cool one to check out. Hours and menu options vary by day and season, so be sure to check their website or call before you head up. Live music most Thursdays and Saturdays, sometimes some poetry?

This is some gourmet pie and it's priced accordingly but fairly considering the ingredients used. Pick white or red sauce, you can't go wrong. For dessert, the Saltimbocca con Nutella is a favorite and, no, we don't mess around with the small size. Reservations are definitely recommended, but sometimes you can slide into a few spots as they open up at the bar.

Very tasty tacos with an impressive array of margarita options (coin, hibiscus, and blood orange to name a few). Sightseeing

These destinations are nearby and worth exploration. In winter months, 4WD/AWD capability and snow tires and/or chains are recommended or required to reach most of these mountain towns. Experience driving in winter conditions is also a plus.

This is a fun town that has Eldora Ski area (www.eldora.com), some great mountain bike trails, and the Frozen Dead Guy Festival (www.frozendeadguydays.org) every year in March. It's a scenic drive or motorcycle ride from Boulder, 26-30 mi depending on the route you choose.

Estes Park is a 44 mile scenic car or motorcycle ride north of Boulder. It's home to the historic Stanley Hotel, which was featured in The Shining. The local moose can make for exciting traffic jams...and if you've never had the pleasure, you absolutely do not mess with the moose! This is a hotspot for tourist activity not only because it is a beautiful area, but also because it serves as one of the entrances to the Rocky Mountain National Forest, specifically to Trail Ridge Road. Weekday visits are recommended if your itinerary permits, otherwise be prepared for some stop and go traffic in town and sometimes even in the canyon on the way into town.

Get off the grid in Ward! Though it's only 18 miles away, it's a bit of a different world up there. It's a good idea to bring cash if you want to buy something at the Utica Street Market because the only ATM that I've heard of up there is in Turntables Antiques (open Saturday and Sunday only). Yeah, it's like that :) Ward is a fun stop on your way up to Peak to Peak Hwy (Rte 72), which you can use to go the 'back way' to Nederland, or drop onto Hwy 7 and into Lyons...or just explore, peep leaves, etc.

You'll hit this town 10 miles into your trip up to Estes Park, but it is a destination in and of itself. There is access to hiking and mountain biking, kayaking, fishing as well as a few places to wet your whistle and grab a bite. I'll warn you now though - HEED THE SPEED LIMIT OF 25 MPH, it's clearly marked and well patrolled. Pro-tip: strategize your route to fuel up your vehicle in Lyons. Prices are much, much lower than in Boulder

Did you know that August 13th is International Lefthanders Day? South paws rejoice! This town, just 10 miles east, has a Lefthanders Day festival every August. Chief Niwot, the southern Arapaho tribal leader for whom the town was named, was left handed. His name translates to Left Hand in English, and as such much of the surrounding area bears tribute to him (LeftHand Canyon, Left Hand Brewing Co, Left Hand Reservoir, Left Hand Creek Park, etc). Niwot has many giant concrete hand chairs distributed around - all lefts, of course! - and hosts Rhythm on the Rails every Thursday night in the summer months.

This is a great find for delicious food and a variety of live music. The roster of artists is constantly changing and the spot is small, so it’s an intimate music experience. It’s also a coffee shop, so it’s a hit all day long. (www.caffesole.com)
