TEMPORARILY CLOSED DUE TO LANDSLIDES. One of the highlights of walking in Wicklow. This linear walk takes you from Bray to Greystones along the stunning coastal path. The path is well maintained and you can return by light rail (DART) to the start point. Greystones has plenty to offer the hungry walker after beautiful views and a range of marine wildlife. From Bray start, there is a path leading to the top of Bray Head offering stunning views of the Irish Sea, The Wicklow Mountains and Bray. This is a very enjoyable walk in a spectacular coastal setting linking Bray and Greystones. It brings you around the side of Bray Head above the railway line and rocky coastline on a path which is a bit rough in places, with a steep climb at the Bray end. Views both up and down the coast are breath-taking. This walk is of MODERATE grade and is 7.1 kms long one way. There is a light rail, DART, option for return to the starting point.

Things to Do

Greenan Maze is set amidst the beautiful Wicklow hills on a pretty countryside farm. With two mazes, three museums, nature walks, woodlands, ponds, wildlife, farm animals, play areas, treasure hunt and fairy tree walk, there is plenty of fun for all ages. Families enjoy spending the day and The Irish Times designated it a Heritage Hotspot “it’s an antidote to urban living within easy reach of Dublin. The two metre high hedge maze and gentler solstice maze with stone circles are fun for all ages and the barn and bottle museum offer a look at farming in former times, as does the farmhouse museum with its traditional furniture and utensils”. The treasure hunt and fairy tree trail are great fun activities for kids but the large hedge maze is the highlight of most peoples day…..getting lost in the maze finds the kid in everyone. The coffee shop opens every day and sells gourmet organic coffees, snacks, sandwiches and cakes aswell as a selection of hand-made crafts, local and global crafts, antique bottles, gifts and environmentally friendly stationery. Greenan Maze host events throughout the year and group tours for all ages including Primary School Tours, Transition Year Bio-diversity Tours, Language School Tours, Kids Parties, BBQ’s and Corporate Family days out. For more information on different kids party options see here: https://www.greenanmaze.com/index.php/events/party/ For more information on school tour options see here https://www.greenanmaze.com/index.php/school-tours-1/ Greenan Maze Farm Opening Times Opening Times for Farm: 10.00am to 6.00pm. The Mottee Stone in County Wicklow is signposted on the Avoca-Rathdrum Road just beyond the "Meeting of the Waters". Go up a trackway to the summit of hilltop. The Mottee Stone probably derives its name from the French word 'Moitie', meaning half lying as it does halfway between Wexford and Dublin. Legend suggests that Fionn MacCumhaill hurled the stone from the top of Lugnaquilla Mountain. However, geologists would suggest that it is one of many erratic boulders that were carried in the great ice flows of the ice age and then deposited as the ice melted. If you visit please note that the huge granite boulder is clearly of a different type of rock to the surrounding copper bearing schists. According to local tradition, such boulders were once commonplace but a zealous clergyman blew up many in the 17th century, who believed that they encouraged paganism. Legend suggests that Fionn MacCumhaill hurled the Mottee Stone from the top of Lugnaquilla Mountain. The Motte Stone near Avoca, County Wicklow, perched on the summit of Cronebane Ridge at 800m, provides incomparable views over the Irish countryside.

Shillelagh Heritage Trail: The Shillelagh Heritage Trail is now up and running. This trail essentially explores the former Estate village of Shillelagh and it’s fascinating links to the Fitzwilliam family from South Yorkshire whose Irish home was Coollattin House. The estate was the largest in County Wicklow stretching 90,000 acres! The trail is 5 miles and visits the beautiful Coollattin Park, Ardeen House, the old railway station and terminus, Tomnafinnoge Woods the courthouse, and many other local heritage gems. The estate created its own electricity supply from water and even had its own fully functioning workshops to fully serve the massive estate. Plus this trail now directly connects to the Wicklow Way and so offers walkers the chance to drop into Shillelagh Village and stay awhile.

Take in the very best Avondale has to offer: Avonmore River, a diverse and wide range of trees, and fantastic views. The route starts in the car park and quickly descends to the Avonmore River, you’ll pass ‘Lovers Leep’ along the way and follow the river as it meanders down the valley. A hard climb brings you back up into the higher forest as you continue along the southern edge forest to finish back in the car park. The route can be walked in either direction. The River Walk, starting from the car park near Avondale House and including some steep descents and climbs, is the longest and hardest of the walks at Avondale. It passes a variety of tree species, goes along beside the river, under the Dublin to Rosslare railway line, and past the deer pen and there is also an option to detour into Love’s Leap where there are magnificent river views. Grade: Moderate Markings: Marked with White markings – Loop Walk Distance: 5.2km Estimated time: 2.5hrs Total height climbed: 150m Highest point: 130m Terrain underfoot: Forest roads, footpaths Suitable for: Anyone with reasonable fitness Notes: Take care along the shores of the river as it is fast flowing.
