The Abaton ( Greek άβατον , "the inaccessible", "untrodden"; compare Abaton ) is a cinema on Allende-Platz in Hamburg's Rotherbaum . It was in October 1970 in a land under parking garage building of Werner Grassmann and Winfried Fedder opened. Located in the immediate vicinity of the University of Hamburg . One of the first cinemas in Germany.
The goal was to establish a Abspielort for films that were not shown in the "normal" cinemas in Germany.
