I have had a lot of gelato in the United States and in Italy, and the Nutty Squirrel is one of my all time favorites. It’s family friendly and homemade one batch at a time.

My wife and I will walk here on nice days and share a slice. We love the key lime and Oreo flavored pies when they have them in the rotation.

They’re famous for their Carribean Roast sandwich. It’s one of the best rated sandwiches in the United States and walking distance from our place. They changed ownership a few years ago, so the recipe has changed as well, but still a great sandwich. If you’re willing to drive, we give the slight edge to Un Bien (original Paseo owners) Carribean Roast sandwich. Both are walk up stand style places.

A la carte style ordering. I enjoy their burgers and chicken sandwiches, and my wife usually gets their veggie burger. It’s a fast casual style restaurant with open air seating options within walking distance of our place.

We would recommend seeing the Fremont Troll and Gas Works Park at the same time as eating at Cafe Turko. Fremont Brewing is a couple blocks away towards Gas Works Park.

There's no food here, but you're welcome to pick something up and bring it to the brewery. There’s long community tables and smaller tables depending on your party size. On a summer day, you’ll see 20-50 bikes parked out front and a packed beee garden.

Din Tai Fung is one of our favorite places to eat anywhere in the world. There are a few locations in Seattle, but we enjoy the University Village location. You can walk around and shop while you wait 30 mins to 2 hours to get a table. If you're a foodie, you have to try Din Tai Fung's soup dumplings. We also love the green beans and Shanghai style rice cakes. Pro Tip: Arrive right before they open and you’ll get seated quickly. Arrive 30 minutes after they open and you’ll still have to wait.

My favorite flavor here is the Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache. If you’re someone who likes every bite to be a little bit different, the textures and flavors in this family-favorite ice cream will keep you busy. If the line is too long, walk across the street and go to Hot Molten Lava Cakes.

Neighborhoods

Fremont is home to creatives, foodies, and techies alike, with public art, craft cocktails, and funky finds around every corner. Though Fremont is chock-full of memorable public art (keep an eye out for the 12-foot-tall Saturn sculpture, the bushy dinosaur topiaries, and the infamous bronze Lenin statue along 36th Street), the Fremont Troll (Troll Ave N), which lurks beneath Aurora Bridge, is a crowd favorite. Glimpse another neighborhood icon, the blue-and-orange Fremont Bridge, from Fremont Canal Park (199 N Canal St), a linear strip along the water perfect for taking in views of the passing boats before heading out on the Burke-Gilman Trail. Take the Burke-Gilman Trail west towards Gas Works Park (2101 N Northlake Way) and enjoy the views of South Lake Union and Downtown from Kite Hill.

Soak up the old-school Ballard vibes along with a coffee and a stack of hotcakes at Hattie’s Hat (5231 Ballard Ave NW). A neighborhood favorite since 1904, the friendly dive is open until 2am and hosts regular trivia and karaoke nights, making it a fun place to end your day, too. Housed in a 108-year-old former fire station, The Hi-Life (5425 Russell Ave NW) serves American classics made with local ingredients morning to night—try the chicken pot pie or the Ballard Market Scramble with seasonal veggies from the year-round Ballard Farmers Market (22nd Ave NW and NW Market St). Tender wagyu tacos make Mexican steak house Asadero (5405 Leary Ave NW) a prime spot for meat lovers, while the beer-battered avocado tacos at vegan tiki bar No Bones Beach Club (5410 17th Ave NW) are delicious enough to sway even dedicated carnivores. Many of the city’s food trucks serve street eats in the brewery district, where you can sample beers at Peddler Brewing* (1514 NW Leary Way), Stoup Brewing* (1108 NW 52nd St), or nine other taprooms within walking distance. Browse the shelves of used and rare books under the watchful eye of the shop’s resident cat, Beau, at Twice Sold Tales (1708 NW Market St), or trawl through seemingly endless bins of vintage vinyl at Bop Street (2220 NW Market St) and Sonic Boom* (2209 NW Market St) record shops. Geek out over the selection of board and roleplaying games for sale at Mox Boarding House (5105 Leary Ave NW), where you can also order pub fare and borrow a game from the hop’s library. Portage Bay Goods (621 N 35th St) is a must-stop for quirky gifts and souvenirs from local makers. The National Nordic Museum* (2655 NW Market St) explores Scandinavian culture and the impact immigrants from those countries have had around the world, and in Ballard particularly. A few minutes’ walk west, Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (3015 NW 54th St) offers the chance to watch ships navigate through the canal that links Puget Sound to Lake Union and to watch salmon pass through the fish ladder from an underwater viewing window (viewing season is mid-June to October, with peak viewing in September). From there, locate one of the brightly colored dockless bikes dotted around the neighborhood and take the Burke-Gilman Trail to Golden Gardens Park (8498 Seaview Pl NW) for beach strolls, forest trails, and views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
