It's FREE! The Air and Space on the Mall is one of the best museums in the world! Some of the most important airplanes and rockets in history are located here and the movies and educational opportunities are among the best anywhere. It is almost always crowded so it is smart to hit it early before the crowds get there as the day progresses.

This new museum is nothing less than spectacular but it’s incredibly popular and hard to get into. Here’s everything you need to know to have a great experience. First off, you have to have timed tickets to enter. They’re free but since the place is so full, you need a ticket to get in. Tickets are released in three month blocks and sell out quickly. However, if you’ve missed getting those tickets, the museum releases same day tickets every morning at 6:30 which are for every half hour from 10 to 1. Try getting tickets for 10:30 or 11, if you can as that will allow you to see half the museum before you hit the food court. If you don’t want to wake up at 6:30 (more like 6:35 when they actually show up) the museum also releases walk up tickets at 1 pm until they run out. These are more reliable on weekdays and out of high summer tourist season. Second, this is actually two museums. The lower level is a history museum explaining enslavement and the struggle for civil rights and equality. The upstairs is about African American accomplishments, music, theater, literature, sports, military. So first question is whether you’d like to Chuck Berry’s 1950s Cadillac and Little Richard’s outfits or experience a lunch counter sit in and see Emmet Till’s casket. If you’re more interested in popular culture, go upstairs first. If you want history and moving stories go downstairs first. Each part can easily take two hours. So, if you only have one day to visit, reconcile yourself to the fact that you’ll likely only be able to see one section of the museum well. The upstairs is more fun but in my humble opinion, every American should see the lower part of the museum and understand how enslavement was all about money. It’s eye opening and moving. For all it’s seriousness, perhaps the greatest part of the museum is the food court. Don’t miss it but make sure you’re there by 12 or you’ll wait in endless lines. The food court has many different areas so don’t just go to the line inside the door. The food is expensive, easily $25 to $35 for lunch but it’s good. This museum deserves multiple visits. Make sure you visit at least once.

It's FREE! There are two wings to visit and so much to see. They are the 2nd largest art museum in the U.S. and have the only Leonardo Da Vinci paninting in the U.S. There is also a food court here.

It's Free to enter and very family friendly. Easy to navigate and easy to understand displays. Everything is accessible by ramp so very stroller and wheelchair friendly as well. They also bring in experts sometimes to speak at different exhibits. A true must see. And a nice break from the weather! Cafe was awesome.

It's FREE! This is definitely one of the venues in DC that is well worth visiting. It is a little overwhelming to take it all in, but I would judge the 3 hours an average time to see the museum in its entirety. The history, significance and experience of the Holocaust Museum makes it a must see in my opinion ... least we forget. If you visit during the summer months you will need a reservation and they were booked about 3 weeks out when I tried to make a reservation so we thought we were going to miss it. However, each morning the day of they have a few scattered reservations and we were able to get 6 for 1:00 PM on a Sunday. The cost is $1 per person to book on line just to cover the cost of the reservation as the admission is free. They do have donation stations at several places in the museum which is worth considering to keep it running.

It's FREE! There is really no need for reservations ahead of time, they do have two sections one for people with and one without, it moves at a steady pace. You can not walk around and explore on your own, you must be with the capital tour person. You are not allowed to bring in any food or drinks that include water! You can take in an empty water bottle and fill it up inside. The tour is about 20 min and it is very crowded. The capital cafe is awesome! It’s pretty big with good food, good price.

This huge statue depicts Martin Luther King and gives people an insight just how great he was and the work he did on bringing everyone together as equal. It’s in a beautiful setting surrounding it with a lovely background.

There are so very many good restaurants and interesting shops that you should allocate several days to take it all in. The buildings are extremely interesting. One drawback is parking. With a two hour limit you need to keep track of your time. I suggest parking in one of the garages such as Hillman. Especially if you decide to take a boat tour.

A Chesapeake bay treasure! Still has that small town feel, especially during the week. Shopping, restaurants and a small public beach, with a perfect place to walk dogs and pier fishing. Visit for the day, bring the whole family!

A lovely and historic city, brick sidewalks, many fine eating establishments, free trolly up and down King Street, dog-friendly, walkable. Lots of great restaurants and cute shops. Things close a little early though so plan accordingly.

Food scene

A lovely area full of restaurants and things to do (music venue, walk and watch). Fantastic to people watch and just enjoy a lively atmosphere. We were on vacation from the UK and only here for one night but with the choice of restaurants it was hard to choose. Wish we could have gone back. Lots of fresh seafood to buy, crab shacks to eat at and other restaurants for a variety of tastes. There was even a small caravan selling s'mores with a fire pit to cook them on!

The National Harbor is a newly added to the area for places to go. It is on the other side of the Potomac River, near the site of the MGM Casino and the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center. This new Waterfront Development has plenty of offer to all. Places to eat, places for childrent to enjoy, places to shop and outdoor art exhibits on display. Plenty of parking (in lots) and some on street (with meter). Can access by water taxi from D.C, and Alexandria and limited Metro buses. Not a shabby place to be when in the area.

The Kennedy center is one of those amazing places that you are lucky to get a chance to see a show in. It's a building that is nicer than any other Broadway theatre or most performing arts centers in the country. You can see multiple performances in a day and can even head up to the cafe or restaurant to get a bite to eat. Even if you're not a performing arts fan, it's definitely worth it to catch a show here once in your life - and don't forget to head up to the terrace to take in the panoramic views of DC!

Shopping, food scene, historical

The town is a treasure trove of shopping- art, antiques, clothing, wine bars, restaurants and food. The B&B is Queen here- only 2 large so-called hotels are here. St. Michaels is a short 1 hour trip to Annapolis and the Naval Academy which is open to the public. Try and get there for noon formation- a spectacle of all Midshipmen gathered together in formation and marching off to the sound of drums and bugles playing Stars and Stripes and Anchors Aweigh. St. Michaels is close to Easton and a very nice Shopping Mall. Tilghmand Island is south of St. Michaels and the Tilghman Island Inn has a very good restaurant that can be reserved thru OpenTable. Summer is high season in St. Michaels and most restaurants and lodging require advanced reservations. A perfect getaway.

An Eastern Market was one of three public markets (along with Western and Central Markets) in Pierre L'Enfant's plan for Washington, D.C. In 1805, President Thomas Jefferson issued a proclamation calling for the market to be located at 7th and L streets near the Navy Yard (about half a mile south of its current location). Despite being heavily damaged by fire during the War of 1812 (possibly due to the fire set by American forces at the Navy Yard to prevent British capture of the stores and ammunition stored there), it remained in operation until the Civil War led to a disruption in the supply of goods. After the Civil War, the original market fell into disrepair leading to the design and construction of a new Eastern Market building at this present location in 1873. It stayed in continuous operation until a major fire (possibly due to arson) severely damaged it in 2007. After extensive repairs, it reopened in 2009. In some respects, this fire was fortuitous as the market's facilities could also be updated in the process, leading to many positive reviews in the press. We visit the market on weekends. On weekdays only the indoor area is open. It consists of one long aisle with a number of meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, and produce vendors, a specialty grocery, a deli, a sweet/bake shop, and even a flower shop. There is also a breakfast/lunch counter which has limited seating. Outside there are a large number of art, custom furniture, pottery, jewelry, produce etc. vendors augment the indoor shops in numerous outdoor stalls.
