Beaches & Hikes

There are 17 miles of stunning beaches and coastal bluffs to explore along the official Sonoma County State Parks Coastline, plus more beyond. Hot tip- Depending on the season or day, the winds will typically pick up later in the day. Plan on surfing, beach hiking and hanging in the morning for calm serenity. If the winds are off shore you will easily be blocked on the beaches below bluffs. Or head inland to explore the rest of beautiful Sonoma County; it's never too windy in the redwoods.
Closest and my top favorite beach. Park here, then hike through the dune and arrive at pristine beach bliss. Just plop down on the sand, or head south for that long romantic walk. You will likely see only a few people, and horses. Pop over into the dunes at any point for a tranquil dune experience (it always seems to be warm and calm in the dunes.) Or head north on the beach for surfing and mingling among other beach goers.

THE surf break in Sonoma County (it's no secret). Probably the busiest beach as well, but this isn't Southern California, so you still might be one of a few people there.

Awesome tide pool beach at very low tide. Park here for hiking north or south on the epic coastal Kortum Trail. Or walk across Highway 1 to hike the Red Bluffs Trail for a super view of the coastline and Pomo Trail into a grove of Redwoods.

Best beach for little ones to play and splash in the water. Protected bay, so (usually) calm and safe. Also kayak or SUP around in the protected waters of Bodega Bay. Launch a boat here as well. This is a county park so there is an $8 fee to access.

Yes they filmed "The Goonies" here!! My favorite drive up the hill and come around the corner for a "wow" view of the rugged coastline. Park at the bluff lot for a vigorous swithback hike down to lovely Blind Beach. This is also where the Kortum Trail begins by heading south on the bluff. Or keep driving and park in one of the lower lots for easier access to Blind Beach and Goat Rock Beach. Park in the north lot for a hike over to the Russian River mouth where you can usually observe large groups of seals and other wildlife, a magical place where waters converge.

This place is radical. Tasty wholesome buffet, always different. Pay what you wish! Engage in thought provoking conversation or just take in the bucolic view of the Russian River while enjoying food that reminds you of your immigrant grandma's natural home cooking.

Stores

Okay, so the couple of little grocery stores in Bodega Bay are limited in items. You may want to stop and shop in Sebastopol or another town with a full sized grocery on the way here. Or you just may find everything you need in Bodega Bay, everyone has different wants and needs. Also there are no department stores, or pharmacies. But that's part of the charm of this sleepy little town. The city of Santa Rosa is about a 45 minute drive, and the small town of Sebastopol is 30 minutes.
