Food Favorites

Captain Bender's Tavern is the closest restaurant to The River Bend Retreat, and is our "go-to" for dinners out. Capt. Bender's features pub fare at reasonable prices in a friendly and relaxed "Cheers"-like atmosphere. Some of our menu favorites are Old Bay dry wings, Towpath nachos (lots of jalapenos!), pickle fries (with spicy sauce - YUM), Hub City salad (don't miss the house dressing - honey, lime pistachio), chili, and crab cakes. They offer nightly specials, AYCE wings on Wednesdays, trivia on Mondays, and live music on most Saturday nights.

Delicious ice cream, large portions, and great prices make Nutter's Ice Cream parlor a don't-miss while visiting the area. Hand-dipped, soft-serve, banana splits, sundaes, flurries, snow balls - you can't go wrong! Nutter's is so poplar that the line typically runs out the door, but it's definitely worth the wait. Along with your appetite, bring cash as they don't take credit cards.

THE DONUTS! Like heaven in pastry form! What's more to say? Well, they do offer A LOT of other fresh, delectable, homemade baked good too, but it's all about the donuts for me! (Closed Sundays and Mondays & bring cash.)

Antietam Creek is a beautiful and historic place to spend time during your visit. Kayak, canoe, or tube down the creek navigating a few rapids along the way, or bring a picnic and spread out on the creek bank by Burnside Bridge or in Devil's Backbone Park. Don't forget your fishing pole!

Approaching their 100th anniversary, Crystal Grottoes Cavern opened to the public in 1922 and is Maryland's only "show" cavern. It's a relatively small cavern, but boasts more formations per square foot than any other cave known to man. The temperature inside the cave is a constant 54 degrees year-round - quite refreshing on a hot summer day. All-in-all a fun stop for the whole family and an especially good rainy-day activity. Stop by while you're in the area! (Bring cash.)

Breweries & Wineries

Fresh on the nearby brewery scene is Harpers Ferry Brewing, a large brewery sitting high atop Loudoun Heights and overlooking the Potomac River and Harpers Ferry. The large outdoor area has lots of picnic tables and absolutely stunning views! Their broad selection of on-tap brews (20 different choices they day we were there) features everything from IPA's to wheat ales to white stouts. Lots of types and flavors to choose from so there is definitely something for everyone. Get a flight of six pours and give a few options a try! HFB has a limited food menu inside, but there is a food truck outside with basic fare - hot dogs, hamburgers, pulled pork, fries, etc. TV's on the walls and often live music complete the experience.

Antietam Brewery is a smaller brewery with a relaxing, locally-inspired atmosphere. Featuring 14 brews on tap the day we went, you can pick 5 for your flight. Decide which ones you like the best and grab a 6-pack of cans to take home. A big plus for Antietam Brewery is their food menu which isn't huge, but it exists unlike a lot of the other breweries, and it's tasty! We got a pepperoni pizza (not bad at all). The BBQ sandwiches and the crab pretzel also sounded tempting. In addition, A.B. gets the most clever award for their flight holders which resemble Burnside Bridge, a local historical attraction on Antietam Battlefield. They also have live music some nights and tours of their brewing area are offered to patrons.

Named after the nearby Cushwa Basin of the C&O Canal, Cushwa Brewing Company is industrial park on the outside and another great microbrewery on the inside. 4 samples of their 12 offerings make up a flight at Cushwa, and 32 oz. to-go cans are available to bring home your favorites. Food is limited to a snack menu, however food trucks are often available outside, and Cushwa welcomes you to bring your own food whenever the trucks are not on site. Trivia, yoga (!), and live music are frequent events to enjoy at Cushwa. They are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
