You can't miss Città Alta, Bergamo's Jewel! A true must-see, just a few minutes from home.
The walls of Bergamo, one of the most famous fortifications built by Venice, constituted the Republic’s westernmost defence system, while the fortress of Famagusta, on the island of Cyprus, was the Venetian outpost located farthest to the east. Never used for military purposes, from the nineteenth century the walls became a privileged site for taking a stroll, after the bastions and battlements were converted into a park.

Never used for military purposes, from the nineteenth century the walls became a privileged site for taking a stroll, after the bastions and battlements were converted into a park.
Fully completed in the mid-1400s with the demolition of various buildings and incorporating an older and small square, in the place where the grain and fodder market was once held, for centuries it was the representative seat of the city government. The home of the Venetian Podesta’ rises up to the west. The Civic Tower overlooks the square. A fountain donated to the city in 1780 by the Podesta' Alvise Contarini stands in the centre of the square.

Several changes were made under the Venetian Republic’s rule, such as the reversal of the front from Piazza Duomo to Piazza Vecchia, along with its complete reorganisation. Even the entry staircase, which leads up to the Salone delle Capriate, was built in the mid-1400s.

The Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art was founded in 1991 to create an integrated cultural system, open to new artistic experiences. It houses works by Morandi, Balla, Boccioni, Manzù, De Pisis, De Chirico, Kandinsky, Richter and Sutherland. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, engravings and photographs along with medals, industrial designs, video installations and films.

The collection includes a piece by Lorenzo Lotto entitled “The Trinity”, painted around 1519 for the Confraternity of the Disciplines, which once hung in Bergamo’s Trinita' church that no longer stands today.
