Fave banh cuon place 3 doors to the right of apartment.
Unique food for the north. Great light meal for about $1. Ask for tra (pronounced chaw! ) da (tea ice) to wash it down. Simplest version is vegetarian, other menu options add different meats to the equation. Add some greens to the bowl of broth then add a banh cuon and pick it all up together and enjoy.

My local market. Love it. Sit down and eat or grab what you need for dinner. Its all here - wet market and dry too. Cheap local prices and great fruit, veggies, and fresh fresh fish and shrimps. YUM!

A bit touristy, but they do a good job of bringing dishes from around the country to one comfortable place that is "tourist standard". Dishes are big so best for a group and sharing.

Bia Hoi!!! Bia49 is only 25 metres from the apartment - thank god! Sit with the locals and say hi. Beer by the glass for about 30¢ per. Buy a round for the table beside you. Really friendly locals... but... almost NO english or french spoken there. Good luck!

Getting Around
The train station. Note it has two entrances.... the one near Ngo Si Lien is the one you need for the night train to Sa Pa. The other side heads south.

Oldest school in VN. Totally revered by the nation. Sacred ground basically. 5 minute walk. Good park right beside which is free.

My favourite museum in Hanoi. Great intro to the land, the people, the history. You will get a much bigger and clearer view of the people once you see this. There are three parts: the museum, the gardens with many full size homes from the provinces and tribal minorities of VN , and a Museum of SEAsica (which can be skipped, in my view). Across the road is a very large and nice park. Grab some lunch and head into the park after the museum for a picnic. Take one of the small blankets from the apartment to lay out on!
