With an area of 1,536 km2 , it is one of the most important protected areas in the insular Caribbean. Since 2002, it is one of the core areas of the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve. Also, it is one of the Important Bird Areas (IBA) of the Dominican Republic.
