Food Scene

James Beard Award-winning chef Alex Roberts' fine dining spot, with a casual café and bakery attached. Truly exquisite on both counts. Stroll down 6th Ave. from our house and get some freshly baked bread and other goods at the café. Also be sure to check out Brasa Premium Rotisserie, his casual spot that's an even closer walk from our house. (See separate listing.) A 9-minute walk straight down 6th Ave. toward the river.

So, so good. Chicken, pulled pork, cornbread. Locally sourced, organic. Try one of the "bowls." Just a few blocks from our house. Which is very, very dangerous. This is chef Alex Roberts' casual dining place; see Restaurant Alma for his four-star establishment (also within walking distance). A 10-minute walk through the neighborhood via 5th Ave and 6th St.

Literally at the end of the street behind our house. There's a little dead-end to 9th Street where it meets E. Hennepin (the 9th St. sidewalk leads to an opening in the fence at the end of the street). Carefully cross Hennepin and voilé, Eli's. Super comfortable local place with good & simple American fare and full bar. Very varied menu. Try the Eastside Martini. A 5-minute walk via 9th St.

Frankly, I'm not a "sweets person"...which I know drives sweets people crazy to hear. Rob, however is, and gives Glam Doll high marks...mostly for its simpler varieties. But if you're looking for a Bourbon Bacon donut, this is your spot. Oh, and beer. A 10-minute walk down 8th St. to Hennepin Ave.

Drinks & Nightlife

Well, it's not just that this newish brewery is in our back yard. It's a beautiful, dog-friendly space in the newly refurbished Miller Textile Building. And very tasty beers served by super nice Minnesotans. Food trucks are often parked outside. Check hours; I believe they're closed Monday and Tuesday. A 4-minute walk via 5th Ave. toward E. Hennepin.

Sightseeing

Whether you plan to see a show at the Guthrie or not, head over any time to check out the view from its cantilevered bridge that extends out over the Mississippi. Enter the lobby, take the 5-story escalator to the top and get one of the best overviews of the birthplace of Minneapolis. Gorgeous views.

The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi is now an active pedestrian/bike bridge. From the street alongside our house (6th Ave.) walk south and you'll eventually arrive at the river and bridge. Take it across the river to downtown. Along the way, note the bronze sculptures along 6th/University. Log on to this address for an audio tour: http://minneapolishistorical.org/tours/show/5

When you head down to Historic Main Street, don't miss this little park. It's about as close as you can get to the waterfalls on the Mississippi and the interpretative signs give a great overview of the milling and lumber history of the area.

Parks & Nature

Take in the place where Minneapolis started. The Falls of St. Anthony, once sacred to the original native inhabitants, then providing the power to drive white settlement and commerce, the area is something to behold. Really nice riverfront trails to explore.
