Tucked into Ocean Park’s residential enclave, Kasalta is the sort of authentic Puerto Rican bakery and diner that you'd cross town to visit. The coffee here is as legendary as the pastries that fill a long, long glass display case and include everything from Danish to iced buns. The garbanzo (chickpea) soup is good too. Plentiful seating, myriad newspapers and a buzzing local ambience add even more icing to the cake. Breakfasts are divine, while the lunchtime specials are scrumptious. As always, great emphasis is placed on locally sourced organic products and healthy eating. Her offering is complemented by signature cocktails and fine wines which can be enjoyed in our elegant bar. “I could’t find a place where the food was like in my house, a place that offered something like what my mother cooks, easy to digest and healthy. I cook exactly like at home; with the best proteins, organic as far as possible, and with local ingredients. My seasoning is very delicate, it is neither flavored, nor salty, nor pretentious. It is for a palate that looks for nutritious things. Our concept; casual gourmet. ” - Paulina Escanes

Steeped in Italian tradition, nostalgia, and beauty; this bastion of fine dining is the crowning accomplishment of chef Franco’s culinary career. Located in the heart of Old San Juan, La Lanterna marks the grand return to the exact spot where he opened his very first restaurant in 1989. An event made even more symbolic by the fact that chef Franco wasted no time in baptizing this new venture with the same name as the restaurant his mother and father owned for 40 years in Perugia, Italy. La Lanterna is a living love letter, the culmination of a life-long cycle, and the beginning of a new delicious chapter. Within its exquisite Old San Juan Spanish colonial architecture, guests may choose to be seated in the indoor dining room or amid the refreshing tropical foliage of the open-air patio. Or, if guests prefer, they may be served from our robust selection of wines and house cocktails at the bar where, in his 1992 trip to Puerto Rico, Luciano Pavarotti himself was served dinner by Chef Franco Seccarelli.

Creative Bakery
Double Cake started as a homemade business dedicated to the creation and making of cakes. Yaritza Lozano decided to combine her knowledge of art and design acquired in the School of Plastic Arts with her second passion: baking. Together with her husband Orlando Santiago and her friend Kassandra de Jesus they created the business from their home, which grew and grew until after 5 years their kitchen space was no longer sufficient. From there, Double Cake Baking Studio was born. A logical evolution of the original concept that would not only serve as a space to continue creating the cakes by order, but would apply the same innovative and artistic spirit to a wide menu of diverse desserts all made 'from scratch'. This is how Double Cake became a baking space that currently stands out for its new 'twist' to classic desserts such as cupcakes, macaroons, breads, biscuits, cakes and cheeses. Visit us and enjoy a good coffee, tea or chocolate in a cozy and different atmosphere.

Lucía Merino is a thoroughly trained pastry chef born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She’s had a passion for desserts and baking from a young age. Lucía attended Culinary School at Johnson & Wales University in Miami. She interned at the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne under Master Pastry Chef Frederic Monet, and continued working there for 3 years. There, she developed her classical French training. She was encouraged by one of her mentors and boss at the time, Chef Jordi Valles, to travel and continue refining her culinary skills. While visiting Puerto Rico before her voyage to Europe, she reunited with her high school sweetheart, Johan Villafañe. They set sail for Spain together, where Lucía worked in Madrid and Barcelona acquiring experience in the creative and innovative world of Spanish gastronomy. During their time in Spain, they traveled around Europe obtaining inspiration and ideas. They began envisioning their future together, shaping their dream of running their own pastry shop. By early 2012, Lucía and Johan were back in Miami forming part of the opening team for the St. Regis Resort at Bal Harbour. Lucía worked as the resort's Pastry Kitchen Supervisor and Johan worked front and back of the house at Jean George Restaurant. Lucía later joined the Gotham Steak kitchen in the Fountainebleu Hotel at Miami Beach. Her ample hotel experience helped her develop her excellent managerial skills, overseeing the pastries and desserts for all departments and events for over 1,000 people. Each experience helped them continue evolving professionally, and their move to Dallas was no different. Lucía joined Chef Richard Gras’s team as Pastry Chef for Oak Restaurant in 2013. She shortly received a nomination for Best Pastry Chef and her famous french macarons were nominated for Best Dessert in Dallas. Driven by their shared ambition of creating a pastry shop, they built Sucre Sucré by lucía, a french macaron online shop. Their success helped them believe they were ready for the next step. They strategically saved their earnings in order to move back to Puerto Rico and begin working on Lucía Patisserie. For the past eight months after moving back home, they’ve been building their brand and getting ready for the opening of their shop.
