Parks, Hikes & Nature

Being in nature is one of the best things to do in LA. In addition to these favorites below, definitely check out the "Secret Stairs" book in the guest room. There are tons of great 'hikes' though the surrounding neighborhoods that are a work out and also just a great way to take in the local flavor.

Lush, shaded easy (no incline) walk that takes you into Griffith. Looks like something out of Snow White with little creeks and bridges everywhere you turn! At the end of the Fern Dell trails you'll find the "Trails Cafe" which is a popular spot for coffee/drinks, gourmet baked goods, sandwiches etc. Lines can get long on weekends. Closed Mondays. From there if you want a more rigorous hike you can continue up the mountain on the Firebreak trail that goes to the Griffith Observatory. It's about a 30 min each way to observatory. Bring water!!

Sightseeing / Museums

I am not going to include the really obvious tourist spots here because you can find that info online easily and never really do that stuff so I will stick to what I know best! :)
Famous architectural landmark you've seen in the movies. Park near the Trails Cafe and hike up, or drive up and pay to park in the lot. This is a key spot to come take some stunning LA selfies! Great 360º views and if you like space, definitely go inside and check out the museum which is FREE (tickets to the planetarium shows are additional).

This is a historic cultural district in Downtown LA that features some of the oldest pueblo in LA. It's very touristy but I think a great short outing to experience some of LA's Mexican influence and history. There is often dancing or performers in the plaza, tons of souvenir shopping in the Mexican style marketplace, many traditional Mexican restaurants, historic churches, museums, adobes and more... https://www.discoverlosangeles.com/things-to-do/discover-olvera-street-and-historic-el-pueblo-de-los-angeles

The next best thing to visiting Japan! Stroll around the Japanese Village Plaza (an outdoor mall) for fun knick knacks, or a delicious Japanese take on french pastry at Cafe Dulce, and lots of restaurant options. There's also a Japanese American Museum nearby that always has interesting exhibitions.

Book tickets in advance or wait in the standby line if you want to be impulsive. You can check out the wait time on their website before you go. Paid parking available undertake museum. This is in Downtown LA (DTLA) across the street from the famous Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Across the other direction is the MOCA museum, another great spot for contemporary art. A bit more of a drive but there's SO much to see here and its well worth it! During the summer, on Fridays starting at 6pm there is free live Jazz in the plaza. Bring a blanket and some dinner or order from the food trucks that are nearby.

Beaches

This is a great beach to visit for a really unique Malibu vibe. A bit further drive but very Instagram worthy scenery! You park off the road and hike down a small path in the cliffs to the beach. The beach itself has beautiful caves and rock formations. You will see a lot of people doing wedding photoshoots and the like.

This is a very well appointed family friendly beach in Santa Monica, you can get here in 35 min if you avoid high traffic times. They have an easy parking lot $12 all day but it fills up early. It often says LOT FULL but go in anyway and circle around because they usually are lying. If its full, make a right back onto PCH and turn into the next public lot on the right, lot "9 North"-- it's also accessible to the facilities. This beach has hands down the cleanest and best smelling bathroom facilities!!! There is a full restaurant (reserve, its popular) but they also have a cafe window for burgers, hot dogs, salads, wraps fries etc. There is a lovely pool open to the public but you must make advance reservations and pay admission but it has hotel-like amenities like lounge chairs and locker rooms. AMAZINGLY CLEAN! Check website for hours and reservation: https://www.annenbergbeachhouse.com/activities/pool.aspx

Manhattan beach is a great place to check out that is a 40 drive from our house and has both nice beaches and tons of walkable beach adjacent streets with restaurants, shops, cafes, ice cream, bars etc. Simmzy's is a fun casual spot for burgers/tacos. For something fancier, ocean side try The Strand.

Shopping

If you like the mall, then you might want to check out the Americana. It's one of the most popular outdoor malls in LA. Our favorite place to eat is Din Tai Fung, famous Taiwanese restaurant chain. The lines are insane but you can get on their waitlist via Yelp.com and also if you eat here you get free valet at the mall! Also check out the Sprinkles cupcake ATM, Apple store, nice H&M, Barneys Coop, Nordstrom, etc. There is also a nice movie theater.
