Food Scene
Revel is our local. K Road is known for its alternative vibes - and Revel is one of its most popular hangouts. They're really laid back, so their hours can vary a little sometimes - but they're generally open from 7am until around 4.30 or 5pm on weeknights, and until late on Wednesday-Sunday. Plenty of veg, vegan, and GF options! The counter food and vegan baking are great, and the coffee is always good.

Satya is a South Indian restaurant with great food - and plenty of veg and vegan options. It's not too expensive (mains from around $16), but still nice for date night. We love the masala dosa!

Orleans does awesome drinks and Southern-inspired snacks. They do live music nights, too.

Parks & Nature
Rangitoto is a volcanic island with incredible birdlife. There are no shops on the island - so pack all your food for the day! The hike to the summit only takes around an hour, and has amazing views back over the city and the harbour. Take the Fullers ferry from the Ferry Building at the bottom of Queen Street. An adult ticket costs $30 return, and the ferry ride is 25 minutes each way. The last ferry to the island is 12.15pm each day - but check the Fullers website for the schedule.

Myers Park is one of the oldest in Auckland - settlers planted non-native tropical trees here to celebrate the warm climate (compared to Britain). The park has an awesome playground, and it's a good shortcut up to K Road (though there are a LOT of stairs!).

Getting Around
Britomart is the city's central train station. If you want a local transport card (which gives you discounts for each ride), it's easiest to buy one here.

Auckland War Memorial Museum isn't just about our history of war - it's our main city museum. Entry is by donation. The museum looks at the history of the city of Auckland, as well as our natural history and local Māori history (including daily cultural performances for around $45 per person) and Pasifika history. That said, it currently does have a very good exhibition of our World War I history for the centenary - this runs until 13 November 2016.

Built in 1929, it has beautiful Art Deco features - and was fully renovated in 2000. The theatre shows plays, dance, and occasionally film - especially during the New Zealand International Film Festival in June-July.

Shopping
Ponsonby Road is known for its boutique, high-end stores and excellent cafes - it's definitely worth exploring. The streets that run off it are tree-lined and have some of Auckland's oldest houses - all beautiful villas.
