Walks close by
The official geographic centre of New Zealand is half way between Nile St Studio and Nelson town centre (though you have to take a detour along a steepish track up a hill to get there. It is well worth the 15-20 min walk as you are rewarded by superb views of Nelson city and port stretching across the Tasman Bay to Mount Arthur ranges (snow capped in winter) and Abel Tasman.
If you descend on the Nelson side of the hill, you'll end up on Milton Street where there is an agreeable local pub (the Sprig and Fern).

Lovely walk along the river (about 1.5km). Great outdoor and indoor seating right by the water's edge. A very popular local hang-out.

Sightseeing
If you feel like a day out close to home, on a nice day, you can walk to the centre of NZ and then along the top ridge where you end up by the entrance to Founders Heritage park. Great place for the kids as well with a big old plane they can climb in to. Small park and cafe as well as all heritage buildings. Just check that there isn't an event /festival before visiting .
