“The Decorative Arts Museum is housed in the former residence of the Ortiz de Taranco family, a landmark building in the city of Montevideo. Built in the early twentieth century on the foundations of the old Comedy Theater (the first that was in the city), was ceded in 1943 to the State with the collection of art created by its owners. “Pedro Figari (1861-1938) fue un pintor, abogado, político, escritor y periodista uruguayo. Su obra, que consta sobre todo de óleos y acuarelas, retratan escenas de la vida colonial y, sobre todo, de la comunidad negra, con sus ritos y costumbres. Además de una colección de este artista, en el museo siempre hay distintas actividades. Funciona de martes a viernes de 13.00 a 18.00 y los sábados de 10.00 a 14.00; la entrada es libre y gratuita. Dato interesante: el rostro de Figari figura en el billete de 200 pesos de Uruguay. Más información: www.museofigari.gub.uy.”
