“Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States but became a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, housing famous convicts such as Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Now, this once infamous prison island is part of the Bay Area’s 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Located one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz is one of the city's most popular attractions. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived. Although the last inmates were transferred off the island in 1963, the main prison block with its steel bars, claustrophobic (9 x 5-foot) cells, mess hall, library and "dark holes," where recalcitrant languished in inky blackness, is still structurally intact.”

“Take the ferry from Tiburon to Angel Island on a sunny day. Wear layers anyway. Fantastic views from this place. You can walk all the way around, hike to the top, sit in the cove and picnic (bring your own food), or visit the immigration sites. If the weather is with you, this is a great day trip. I think there is still some overnight camping, for which you will need reservations. ”

State / Provincial Park
“Forget the crowded mayhem of Muir Woods. Here's a beautiful stand of redwoods next to a quiet creek that locals love. Excellent spot for a picnic. It can get crowded on weekends (but NEVER like Muir Woods), so if you go on Saturday/Sunday, try to get there before noon. If you can, visit on a weekday and you'll have the place to yourself. There's a wonderful 5-mile walking/biking trail on the old railroad right-of-way. It's a state park, so you'll need to pay (per car) to enter.”

“Sprawling park with scenic, multi-use trails through meadows, eucalyptus woods, bluffs & beaches. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline features over 100 species of bird due to a myriad of habitats within its 2,315 acres. Bird life can be found on sandy shores. There are beautiful views of Mt. Tamalpais, the Marin shoreline, and San Pablo Bay with its sailboat and shipping traffic. Visitors can birdwatch, hike, ride their bicycles or horses, or take the park's shuttle bus for a mile and a half to reach Point Pinole's 1,250-foot fishing pier. There is a small fee to ride on the shuttle bus (see Shuttle Ride Fee under Park Info). Please note that dogs are not allowed on the shuttle or on the pier.”
