“One of the last remaining redwood forests in the San Francisco Bay area, the Muir Woods are only a couple of hours from San Jose and will transport you to another world. The trip itself by car is wonderfully picturesque, taking you across the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headland, but once you arrive at the Muir Woods, the scenery will take your breath away. Monumentally large trees tower above visitors on all sides and you can hike towards the ocean or up into the mountains. Be sure to pack plenty of water and a lunch, as shops are few and far between in the forest. ”

“Alcatraz was the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States but became a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, housing famous convicts such as Al Capone and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Now, this once infamous prison island is part of the Bay Area’s 80,000-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Located one-and-a-half miles from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz is one of the city's most popular attractions. A visit to the island includes a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived. Although the last inmates were transferred off the island in 1963, the main prison block with its steel bars, claustrophobic (9 x 5-foot) cells, mess hall, library and "dark holes," where recalcitrant languished in inky blackness, is still structurally intact.”

“Stunning vistas of San Francisco from the summit of Mount Tamalpais. Take the Highway 1 exit from 101 and follow Highway 1 to Panoramic Highway. Turn right (a very sharp turn) onto Panoramic. When you see Pantol Campround, turn right onto Pantol Rd. Then, turn right on East Ridgecrest Rd and follow it to the end to reach the East Peak of Mount Tamalpais. On the return you can continue on to the coast by staying on East Ridgecrest Rd which turns into West Ridgecrest Rd. It offers wonderful coastal views. West Ridgecrest Rd runs into the Fairfax Bolinas Rd. Turning left will take you to coastal Highway 1, turning right will take you to Alpine Lake, Fairfax and eventually back to Highway 101. The Fairfax Bolinas Rd. is a narrow curvy mountain road, drive carefully.”

“Reserve a few hours to circumambulate the plaza, taste wine and buy stuff.... get a picnic and settle in the park or eat at one of the many restaurants. I've had a few art shows at Bump Tasting Room and that is fun. Say hi to Geordie for me. Then get frozen yogurt at Top That next door. I'd go to the art museum too but that is me.”

“Our local park in next door Ross offers access to dozens of trailheads, both hiking and bike routes. The parking lot is small and you may have to wait in line for a space. If there's a line up of waiting cars be patient, it doesn't take too long for a space to open up. To avoid the wait altogether, we often have our daughter drop us off at the park and we hike home from there. The park is about a 5 minute drive from 274 Oak.”

“To get a feel for giant coastal redwoods in their natural habitat, step out of downtown Larkspur and into the majestic redwood groves on King Mountain. The trees here are bigger than the ones around SF. Take the Ladybug Trail to gushing Dawn Falls or circuit the mountain’s mixed woodlands on the Loop Trail. Listen for calls of the pileated woodpecker, one of the largest old-growth forest birds in North America with a striking red crest. And watch out for precious banana slugs below, a prized decomposer of coastal forests.”
