“Hokkaido is the birthplace of beer in Japan. Sapporo Beer, one of the oldest and most popular beer brands in the country, has been brewed in Sapporo since 1877. The Sapporo Beer Museum (サッポロビール博物館, Sapporo Beer Hakubutsukan) was opened in 1987 in a former brewery from the Meiji Period. The museum introduces the history of beer in Japan and the process of beer making. After the exhibitions, beer tastings are available at a small fee. Alternatively, paid tours are held in Japanese that include a tasting session at the end. Next to the museum is the Sapporo Beer Garden, which consists of a few restaurants. Among the restaurants are several, atmospheric beer halls, but also the more sophisticated Garden Grill restaurant. Popular in the beer halls are all-you-can-drink beer and all-you-can-eat mutton BBQ, a popular local dish named after the great Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan (Jingisukan in Japanese).”

“The Historic Village of Hokkaido (開拓の村, Kaitaku no Mura) is an open air museum in the suburbs of Sapporo. It exhibits about 60 typical buildings from all over Hokkaido, dating from the Meiji and Taisho Periods (1868 to 1926), the era when Hokkaido's development was carried out on a large scale. There are four different sections: a town, fishing village, farm village and a mountain village. The Hokkaido Museum (北海道博物館, Hokkaido Hakubutsukan) documents the history and nature of Hokkaido and is located about a ten minute walk from the open air museum. The museum focuses on five main themes, including Ainu culture, history and wildlife.”

“The Hokkaido University Museum is just a 10-minute walk from the North Exit of Sapporo Station and admission is free. Among the buildings on the Hokkaido University campus, the museum exudes a formidable presence and sense of history. The museum has a number of must-see exhibits, including a huge skeleton of a Holstein bull and a life-sized mock-up of a woolly mammoth. In addition to specimens, the museum exhibits many intriguing instruments as well, such as a seismograph, which will even respond to light footsteps, an interactive exhibit room where you can touch specimens, and the museum laboratory where you can see research taking place.”

“Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art is located in the city of Sapporo, Hokkaido. The gallery collection consists mainly of artworks by Migishi Kotaro, a self-taught painter born in Sapporo in 1903. He is regarded as a pioneer of avant-garde art. He died at the young age of 31, but during the short period of 12 years in which he was painting, his style went through many changes, and later in life he produced a number of surrealist works. The collection was donated by Migishi’s family after his death, and the gallery opened on 1 July 1983, exactly fifty years after he passed away. White walls, a glassy lobby, and a light gray interior create a space befitting an artist with a love for the modern.”

“Seikatei was built by the Hokkaido Development Commission in 1889 as a reception hall for the distinguished guests. The Emperor Meiji visited here during his trip to Sapporo in 1881. The building features both Japanese and Western style. It is located in Kairakuen park, the oldest park in Sapporo. Unlike the other historical buildings in Sapporo, such as the Sapporo Clock Tower and Hoheikan, Seikatei still stands its original place.”
