“The North Carolina Museum of Art has more than a dozen galleries holding works from around the world and a variety of art types. Originally starting with 139 works from Europe and America, the museum has grown to include African, Egyptian and Jewish works of art while also expanding European and ancient American holdings. With 30 added Rodin sculptures, the NCMA leads the holdings of this artist’s work in the southeastern United States. Other galleries hold everything from Renaissance paintings to contemporary photography. Exhibitions also run at the museum for several months at a time for guests to visit. Outside the museum is the 164-acre Ann and Jim Goodnight Museum Park, recently expanded and featuring monumental public art installations inspired by the natural world and preservation of landscapes, including the Gyre rings, Cloud Chamber for the Trees and Sky and Askew, as well as several recreational activities, picnic spots, and wooded trails. Tours are given daily if you or a group would like to learn more about the collections. When it’s time for lunch, you can stop by the Iris restaurant located inside the museum, specializing in contemporary American cuisine in a modern setting. (Also open for dinner! Order from items such as the Iris Burger, Seared Scallops with Red Curry Lemongrass Broth, Seafood Burrito and more.) For those interested in researching art periods or artists, the Art Reference Library holds over 40,000 volumes of books and available catalogs and databases. Kids to seniors can enjoy the many programs occurring throughout the year, including classes, concerts, films, camps, and workshops. Before you leave, head by the Museum Store, where items based on the museum’s collections and exhibits are available to purchase, perfect as souvenirs or gifts for family and friends. Admission is free, while some fees are given for specific programs, exhibitions, and large tours. Hours: Tues.-Thurs., 10am-5pm; Fri., 10am-9pm; Sat.-Sun., 10am-5pm; Mon., closed.”

“For those who like museums, Roanoke's art museums reflect a rich culture. Taubman is a work of art in the building itself as well as having changing exhibits that are thought provoking and amazing. In addition to the Taubman, Center in the Square Museums is downtown and includes: African American Culture Museum, a History of Western Virginia, Roanoke Pinball Museum, and Science Museum of Western Virginia. Visit Eleanor D Wilson at Hollins University or Olin Hall Galleries at Roanoke College for special exhibits and permanent collections. Include a stop at Salem Museum for additional history about the area. ”

“Listed on the National Historic Landmark, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest was huge plantation and retreat home for America's 3rd President. The edifice's architecture, which is considered a fine example of neo-classical architecture, was designed by Jefferson himself. This architectural wonder is visited by hordes of nationals and tourists who come here to discover tit-bits of the life of the US President during the happy and final days of his life. Archaeological excursions are also taking place at the Poplar Forest. If you are truly interested in history or architecture, then the Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest is a must visit for you. “Great hiking and views of Natural Bridge. I recommend going early and watching the sunrise from on top of the bridge. After you're done stop in the lodge and grab an adult beverage and relax on their porch. There's also a restaurant there but the food is just average in my opinion. ”

“Pilot Mountain is the easiest mountain hiking to access from Winston-Salem, just a half hour drive away up US-52 N. The park surrounds the Pilot Mountain bald, where you can watch rock climbers do their thing. Hikes range from easy to strenuous, so you can pick according to your level of ability or interest, or simply drive to the top and enjoy the view. You can also visit nearby Mt. Airy, birthplace of Andy Griffith, and the inspiration for Mayberry and the Andy Griffith Show. It's fun... like stepping back in time. ”

“The highest point in the area is Clingman’s Dome. It’s about 1:15 hours from the cabin but we’ll worth it. The views are the most spectacular you will see in the area. It’s also wheelchair friendly and has restrooms. There are NO RESTAURANTS here so take snacks or pack a lunch. Be sure to check the visibility index. You need good weather to maximize the views.”
