This is a walking and history tour that walks the complete outside circumference of the gated portion of the White House. Prior to 09/11, as a former White House staffer, I could simply show my ID and take visitors in for a tour. That perk evaporated on 09/12/2001, and inside tours must be requested through a member of Congress. An external, walking tour is the next best thing to a tour inside, with my sharing features of major rooms in the White House, the West Wing, and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where my office was when I worked at the White House. In addition to the history of the building and stories about some of its occupants, you get the perspective of a former White House staffer who worked for two US presidents and on the campaigns of two candidates who did not win the presidency. I have met every president who has served during my lifetime, from FDR through the current president. The meet place is outside the White House Visitor Center, on Pennsylvania Avenue, between 14th and 15th Streets, NW. The walk begins by passing through the recently dedicated National World War I Memorial, and proceeds past the Sherman Monument to the Ellipse on the side of the White House, with stories, photographs, and opportunities for questions. We'll take a tour of historic Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, the hometown of George Washington, and a center of the American Revolution. And take in a bunch of Civil War history along the way. We might visit a church from 1776 that contains the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution. The home of the mentor of Patrick Henry ("Give me liberty or give me death!") We'll discuss the enslaved woman who irked Martha Washington, and why George decided to free his slaves. We'll see the home of Washington's doctor, where we'll discuss the ill-fated remedies used at the time of GW's death. Civil War sites will include the site of the Appomattox statue, the locale of a fiery skirmish between Union troops and Confederate sympathizers, and the workplace of a famous rebel spy. Also, the market place where Washington lost a fist fight! And the place of GW's mysterious lady friend. As well as the meeting hall where George Mason composed the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. The townhouse of GW's older brother Lawrence. The mansion where GW helped plan the French and Indian War. The tavern where he held his inaugural ball. And his townhouse away from Mt. Vernon, & more! Other things to note: Old Town can reached from the King St. metro station. From it, take the free trolley bus down King St. Plenty free parking on streets 3-4 blocks north and south of King St.

The rolling hills East of the Anacostia River, with a commanding view of modern Washington DC, have been settled for centuries. From the trading grounds of the indigenous Nacotchtank, to a Whites-only planned suburb known as “Uniontown,” to a predominantly Black enclave, Anacostia has seen dramatic change and stark contrasts. The neighborhood served as a home for famous abolitionist Frederick Douglass, an escape route of assassin John Wilkes Booth, protest grounds for WWI Veterans, and a modern testament to the resilience of Washington’s Black community. Anacostia’s fascinating and diverse architecture encapsulates the many identities the neighborhood has held. With new development on the horizon and recent local investment in historic preservation, there’s never been more to learn and explore in Historic Anacostia!

We will meet at the infamous Lincoln Memorial to take advantage of it’s beautiful white backdrop and architecture. There, we can capture great views of the entire national mall seeing the Monument and Washington Capitol. Then we will continue to explore the mall as we walk alongside the reflecting pool towards the WWII memorial then past that to the Washington Monument. Washington’s most famous and lesser known museums can be found on the East side of the National Mall, laid out between the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. Called “America’s Attic,” the Smithsonian Institution is one of the largest museum organizations in the world, with 30 million annual visitors, 19 museums and over 140 million items in the collection. On this tour, explore how the Smithsonian Institution has helped shape the fabric of the National Mall since 1847. Please note we’ll be discussing the museums from the outside, except the National Gallery of Art, which we'll explore inside and out!

Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 400,000 servicemen and servicewomen. With a commanding view of Washington DC, Arlington preserves the history of the United States' past. Every war is represented here, from the American Revolution to the present day. Two Presidents, thirteen Supreme Court justices, senators, congressmen, war heroes, and thousands of others are interred among the rolling hills, stone monuments, trees, flowers and modest grave markers. Take a guided walk through the cemetery to hear the famous and little known stories contained within this hallowed ground. Other things to note All guests at the cemetery must go through a security screening at the Visitors Center. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour to get through security.

Built 125 years ago, nearly every President since Teddy Roosevelt has visited. Things to note We guarantee you can see at least 60 of our legendary rooms — but be warned secret doors are tricky to find —if you find 2 or 3 you are an above average sleuth All ages can attend. If you have a short attention span, this is the place for you because there is so much to see and do. If you are a minimalist, you will be overwhelmed. Museum closes: Sunday - Tuesday at 6pm and Wednesday - Saturday at 9pm.

There we will sample donuts made from a business that’s been in the same family for five generations. From there we’ll head downtown, where we’ll see a restaurant favored by a former President before passing by the White House itself for a perfect photo op. After soaking in some history at Lafayette Square, we’ll head deeper into DC to try some local fan favorite donuts from local celebrities. From there, we’ll head down Palmers Alley, one of the most photographed spots in DC, where we’ll end our adventure with delectable donuts with an international flavor.
